Depressing? Try damien Rice.. I even start to cry when I hear his voice..

Me too Maud.

I'm not sure whether I'm crying because the lyrics are touching, or whether I just find the melody depressing..

no, no, no, people who think the smiths are depressing are missing the point entirely, the smiths are hilarious! look at the song titles, and listen hard to the lyrics, there's a lot of humour there,

You're absolutely right. It never ceases to amaze me that people find the Smiths / Morrissey depressing: he's one of the most humourous lyricists of "his generation", as anybody who took the trouble might discover, rather than just repeating all the familiar, ill-informed "Smiths=depressing" cliches.

And I'm not a Smiths devotee, before anybody thinks I'm just being precious here.

The Smiths : Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now (lyrics)

I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour

But heaven knows I'm miserable now

I was looking for a job, and then I found a job

And heaven knows I'm miserable now

In my life

Why do I give valuable time

To people who don't care if I live or die ?

Two lovers entwined pass me by

And heaven knows I'm miserable now

I was looking for a job, and then I found a job

And heaven knows I'm miserable now

In my life

Oh, why do I give valuable time

To people who don't care if I live or die ?

What she asked of me at the end of the day

Caligula would have blushed

"You've been in the house too long" she said

And I (naturally) fled

In my life

Why do I smile

At people who I'd much rather kick in the eye ?

I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour

But heaven knows I'm miserable now

"You've been in the house too long" she said

And I (naturally) fled

In my life

Why do I give valuable time

To people who don't care if I live or die ?

So what's so miserable about that? If you break it down verse by verse, I can't see many sentiments expressed here that are difficult for anybody to relate to, (with possible exception of the reference to Caligula)It seems to be more about ennui and resentment than genuine despair. Pretty lightweight "everyday" stuff.

It's got pathos, but ...depressing? Nah.

Hurt-Nine Inch Nails

I hurt myself today

To see if I still feel

I focus on the pain

The only thing that's real

The needle tears a hold

The old familiar sting

Try to kill it all away

But I remember everything

[Chorus:]

What have I become

My sweetest friend

Everyone I know goes away

In the end

And you could have it all

My empire of dirt

I will let you down

I will make you hurt

I wear this crown of thorns

Upon my liar's chair

Full of broken thoughts

I cannot repair

Beneath the stains of time

The feelings disappear

You are someone else

I am still right here

[Chorus:]

What have I become

My ssweetest friend

Everyone I know goes away

In the end

And you could have it all

My empire of dirt

I will let you down

I will make you hurt

If I could start again

A million miles away

I would keep myself

I would find a way

Can't You See

I'm gonna take a freight train

Down at the station, Lord

I don't care where it goes

Gonna climb me a mountain

The highest mountain

Gonna jump off

Nobody gonna know

Can't you see

Whoa can't you see

What that woman, Lord

She been doin' to me

Can't you see

Can't you see

What that woman

She been doin' to me

I'm gonna find me

A hole in the wall

I'm gonna crawl inside and die

'cause that lady now

Mean ol' woman Lord

Done told me goodbye

Can't you see

Whoa can't you see

What that woman, Lord

She been doin' to me

Can't you see

Can't you see

What that woman

She been doin' to me

I'm gonna buy me a ticket now

As far as I can

Ain't never comin' back

Ride me a Southbound

All the way to Georgia now

'till the train run out of track

Can't you see

Whoa can't you see

What that woman, Lord

She been doin' to me

Can't you see

Can't you see

What that woman

She been doin' to me

Oh Lord

Can't you see

Whoa can't you see

What that woman, Lord

She been doin' to me

Can't you see

Whoa can't you see

What that woman

She been doin' to me

Can't you see

(Whoa she's such a crazy lady)

Can't you see

What that woman

(What that woman)

She been doin' to me

Can't you see

(Whoa I can't stand it)

Can't you see

What that woman

She been doin' to me

Can't you see

(I'm gonna take a freight train)

Can't you see

(Down at the station, Lord)

What that woman

(Ain't never comin' back)

She been doin' to me

Can't you see

(Gonna ride me a southbound)

Can't you see

(All the way to Georgia now)

What that woman

('til the train run out of track)

well maybe that was a bad example but you can't dictate how people interpret songs! maybe they are more about resentment, but if you are in the "right" state of mind, they might feel depressing.

'Alone Again, Naturally' by Gilbert O' Sullivan is very, very depressing. Beautiful song, but so sad.

That´s the most depressing of them all... and beautiful too, yes. Now if you really want to be depressed, get "Berlin", Lou Reed, and listen to the whole album.

Go To The Mirror Boy by the Who really depressed me the other day, well i'm not sure if depressed is the right word, but I was in a really strange mood, it was something to do with the slow, soft, melancholy sound of it.

They don't come much more depressed than this....

"Depressed Christmas" by Culturecide

(mumbled and murmured to the tune of "White Christmas")

I'm having a depressed Christmas

Just like the one I had last year.

My slit wrist glistens, as I listen

To the last Christmas song I'll ever hear.

I'm having a depressed Christmas,

With this last letter that I write.

May your days be merry and bright,

And may all your Christmases be white.

I have a whole CD of depressing Christmas music. Stuff like "Who took the merry out of Christmas" by The Staple Singers and "Purple Snowflakes" by Marvin Gaye. Ouch.

I agree that Damien Rice has some unbelieveably moving songs that usually make me feel sad. The weird thing with him is that I often have no idea what he's singing about and I feel sad anyway. The producers of the movie Closer figured this out when they used "The Blowers Daughter."

The song that tears me up is "Taxi" by Harry Chapin. You have 2 people who gave up on their dreams, and to me, that's horribly depressing.

"I'm Gettin' Nuttin For Christmas"...so sad.

I remember crying the first time I listened to Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer.

A true tear-jerker... and I still miss Grandma to this day...
