Long Intros

With the discussion about longest song running it reminded me of something I thought of a while back while listening to the radio. What song do you think has the longest introduction or maybe I should say instrumental prior to the start of the vocals. I can't think of one longer than "I Need A Lover" by John Mellencamp. Seems like that sucker goes on forever before the lyrics start. Any others?

The Van Halen version of Pretty Woman that is actually considered a separate song, "Intruder", but leads right into the next. I was listening to it today in my car and the intro is better than the song. I know there were a lot of covers on Diver Down, but I think it's probably the groups best album. "Little Guitars" is brilliant and could any other group do the song "Cathedral"? Eddie did it all with one hand, amazing. Also cool to hear the Dave is now a paramedic and doing something worthwhile. I didn't like the years where everyone called him a jerk because he meant so much to me as a child. I was 14, I had 4th row seats and still Dave didn't want me backstage, his loss. I would have thrown my bra but I hadn't quite started to develop yet and didn't wear one at that age. I'm still skinny, I should shut up now, but I won't because I had another idea. In school an 'A' is good but for a bra size for an adult woman its bad. A 'D' is a horrible grade in school but for a bra size its top notch. Why is that? Are they trying to make dumb, well-endowed girls feel better. "Sure you are making D's in school but so are your breasts and you can make tons of money in porn even if you can't spell your own name."

How about "Funeral For A Friend" by Elton John? It lasts about 4 minutes before the "Love Lies Bleeding" part kicks in. I also was thinking "I Need A Lover" before entering this thread. That songs seems like it's going to be an instrumetal, then all of the sudden he starts singing.

Did You Know - the point where the vocals come in on a song is called the "vocal post." In radio, it's important to know where it comes in so you don't "Stomp The Post."

vocal post

I didn't know that. It still annoys me when a DJ talks during the intro to a song, instrumental or otherwise. For that matter, anyone annoys me if talking while I'm trying to hear a song. Music is a ritual to me. It's impossible to enjoy it while someone's chattering in your ear.

A rule that I make clear to all my friends, talk after the song, not during. Silence is golden when listening to great music, IMHO.

I've always felt the time for a DJ to talk is after a song, including info about the band and title.

I do realize that DJs don't have the freedoms I wished they did, though, when trying to go by the laws of their boss.

Sometimes though, I wanna put a rambling DJ on the whipping post.

It's a love/hate relationship. Love the DJs for playing great songs, hate 'em for ruining it.

:P

And Muzik, I know what you mean about DJs chit chatting during the intro. Yesterday, Life's Been Good To Me So Far came on the radio, and the DJ talked all through the intro, and then even when Joe was singing, the DJ talked over that. But that station has the worst DJs I've ever heard.
