1948 Kenny Loggins, guitarist and vocalist with Loggins and Messina, is born in Everett, Washington.

1949 Rock singer and songwriter Marshall Chapman is born.

1959 Kathy Valentine, former member of the Go-Go's, is born.

Deaths

1964 British blues singer and harmonica player Cyril Davies dies of leukemia at age 32.

1980 Carl White, one of the four members of the 1960's group the Rivingtons, dies in his Los Angeles home at age 48. The Rivingtons had hits in 1962 and '63 with "Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow" and "The Bird's the Word," which was copied almost note-for-note in 1964 by the Trashmen, who called it "Surfin' Bird" and took it into the top ten.

Events

1963 Gary "U.S." Bonds files a $100,000 suit against Chubby Checker, charging Checker "stole" "Quarter to Three" and turned it into "Dancin' Party." The suit is settled out of court.

1970 Max Yasgur, on whose New York farm the August 1969 Woodstock Festival was held, is sued for $35,000 in property damages by neighboring farmers.

1976 Kenneth Moss, former record company executive who already pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the 1974 drug induced death of Average White Band drummer Robbie McIntosh, is sentenced to 120 days in the Los Angeles County Jail and four years probation.

1978 The soundtrack album of the hit disco movie "Saturday Night Fever," featuring the Bee Gees, the Trammps, Tavares, K.C. & the Sunshine Band, Kool & the Gang, MFSB and others enter the soul album chart. It will peak at Number One for six weeks starting February 18 in its 39 weeks on the chart.

1994 Singer Rick James is sentenced in Los Angeles to five years and four months in prison for sexual assault on two women. The singer, best known for his 1981 hit "Super Freak," was convicted of holding one woman against her will and forcing another to have sex with his girlfriend during a six-day cocaine binge.

1957: Bill Haley, who previously rejected in invitation to tour Australia because some of his Comets were averse to flying, begins a two-week tour down under in Newcastle. Sharing the bill are Lavern Baker and Joe Turner.

1979: Canadian rock band Rush is named the country's official "Ambassadors of Music" by the Canadian government.

1991: Steve Clark guitarist with Def Leppard, was found dead at his London apartment, after a night of heavy drinking and drug use.

1969: Mick Jagger is refused a Japanese visa on account of a 1969 drug bust, halting the Stones' plans to tour the Orient.

1979: A benefit concert called A Gift of Song -- the Music of UNICEF Concert is held at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. NBC tapes for broadcast the following night. Those performing include Olivia Newton-John, Rita Coolidge, the Bee Gees, Rod Stewart, Donna Summer, John Denver, Kris Kristofferson, Abba and Earth, Wind & Fire. They help to raise about a half-million dollars for the world hunger organization.

2003 Maurice Gibb, bassist and keyboardist of the Bee Gees, dies after undergoing abdominal surgery in Miami. The singer was 53.

1963 The Whiskey-A-Go-Go opens its doors on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, the first rock club in the city. In the next decade and beyond, the Whiskey will be a popular meeting place for the record industry and a good place to be seen if you want to get into the industry. The Doors, among others, got their start there.

1964 Ring of Fire by Johnny Cash becomes the first country album to top the U.S. pop album chart.

1968 The Daily Mirror of London reports Jimi Hendrix has moved into the London townhouse where George Frederick Handel is believed to have composed "Water Music" and the "Messiah." Hendrix assures the newspaper that he will also compose in the Handel house and "not let the tradition down."

1969 Jethro Tull's debut album, This Was is released.

1977 Keith Richards is convicted of cocaine possession and fined $1,300.

1980 The Pretenders' debut LP is released in North America.

1984 The album Thriller by Michael Jackson becomes the all-time bestselling LP.

1992 Paul Simon becomes the first international star to perform in South Africa following the end of the UN cultural boycott. He began a concert tour in Johannesburg.

1994 Pop singer-turned-politician Sonny Bono announces he is running for Congress on the Republican ticket. He wins and represents the Palm Springs, CA, area in the U.S. House until his death in January 1998.

2000 A newspaper in Hilo, Hawaii, (the Tribune-Herald) reports that a security guard at Keahole-Kona International Airport found about half an ounce of marijuana in a bag that pop superstar Whitney Houston was carrying. Security officers tried to detain Houston but she walked away — and her flight to San Francisco was gone by the time police arrived at the scene.

1975: A nine-city 18-show tour of Europe starts for Warner Brothers acts Little Feat, Tower of Power, the Doobie Brothers, Bonaroo, Montrose & Graham and Central Station. The Warner Brothers Music Show does well with European audiences, especially Little Feat which establishes an adoring cult audience during the month-long tour.

1976: Long May You Run an LP by the Stephen Stills/Neil Young band is certified gold.

1992: Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall's third child, Georgia May Ayeesha Jagger, is born.

1993: The original members of Cream reunite in Los Angeles to perform at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Along with Cream, others to be inducted included CCR, The Doors, Van Morrison, Sly and the Family Stone, Frankie Lymon, Dinah Washington and Etta James.

2003: Bee Gee Maurice Gibb died in Miami at age 53.

Elvis Presley records in Memphis for the first time since his early days with Sun records; the session eventually produces his 18th Number One hit single, "Suspicious Minds." (1969)

Eric Clapton has spent the last couple of years troubled by drug addiction. However, on this night he makes a triumphant comeback at London's Rainbow Theater. He sells out two shows as the set opens and closes with "Layla." Afterward Clapton told a reporter, "I was very nervous, felt sick, the whole bit." Referring to the audience he responded, "They don't know how much it helped me." (1973)

The trial of seven Brunswick Records and Dakar Records employees on charges of bilking artists out of more than $184,000 in royalties began. The charges had been brought during a federal investigation for possible instances of payola. (1976)

Elvis Presley's version of Paul Anka's "My Way" goes gold in five months after the King's death. Earlier, it had become one of Presley's 78 Top Twenty-five hits. (1978)

The Police begin recording their debut album. (1978)

26 years ago Soul pop singer Danny Hathaway, known for his duets with Roberta Flack ("Where Is the Love?") dies after jumping, (or falling-police couldn't reach a conclusion) from a 15th floor hotel room in New York City. According to his record company, Atlantic, Hathaway had been having some psychological problems and hadn't done much in the way of music lately. He was 34 years old. (1979)

The Y.M.C.A. files a lawsuit against the Village People over their song, "Y.M.C.A." The suit was later dropped. (1979)

The Grateful Dead, Beach Boys and Jefferson Starship are the featured acts at a benefit concert for the people of Kampuchea, held at the Oakland Coliseum. (1980)

Singer Bobby Brown is arrested in Augusta, GA for simulating a sex act onstage. It's the second time that the Augusta police department gets him for the same offense. (1993)
