bazooka
1971 - Theme From Shaft by one hit wonder Isaac Hayes tops the US charts. Isaac Hayes was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2002. Hayes first arrived on the 60's scene in Memphis as the keyboardist for the Mar-Keys, the Stax Records ensemble, where he can be heard on recordings for Otis Redding and William Bell. There, Hayes teamed up with David Porter writing and producing for Sam & Dave ( Hold On, I'm Comin', Soul Man, When Something Is Wrong With My Baby ). Functioning as house composers for Stax, they penned material for other acts on the roster, such as Carla Thomas (B-A-B-Y) and Johnnie Taylor (I Got to Love Somebody's Baby, I Had a Dream). Hayes voices the South Park character Chef, known for serving up impromptu sexy ballads and dishing out pearls of wisdom. But his career?s most notable achievement remains, as he sums it up: ?Shaft. Damn right.? [biographical pastiche from various sources]
_Annabelle_
November 20... Birthdays: 1942: Norman Greenbaum 1946: Duane Allman 1947: Joe Walsh 1973: Keith Moon collapses twice during the first date of the Who's U.S. tour, in San Francisco. First, he falls over his set during "Won't Get Fooled Again." Then after being tended to backstage, Moon plays for another ten minutes before he's carried off again. So, Pete Townsend asks for a volunteer from the crowd to replace him and a 19 year old came up and finished the show. The kid was Scott Halpin, who took a shot of brandy and sat down at his idol Moon's drum kit. Townsend counted off and Halpin began drumming. 1991: The Rolling Stones sign a $45 million deal with Virgin, making them rock's highest paid group (the record has since been beaten). OLD 55
November 20 1954 Indiana bartenders request that local DJs cease playing Ferlin Huskey's The Drunken Driver (in which 2 children are killed by a DD) because the song is "bad for business". 1959 DJ Alan Freed is fired because of the Payola (gratuities in exchange for airplay) scandal. He's the ONLY DJ honest enough to "refuse to deny" he's involved in it. 1961 There are 45 different "Twist" records on the market. Chubby Checker appears on TV hourly in pre-recorded lessons of the new dance craze. 1967 Time Magazine gives rave reviews to the Doors second LP Strange Days which reaches #3 shortly after. 1970 Ray Davies has to re-record a line from Apeman "the air pollution is a foggin-up" , which record execs. say sounds a bit rude; (sorry - NOT Lola/ Cherry Cola - that was the previous June).
