Otokichi
I've heard of the song "Cotton Eye Joe" long before it popped up in Clint Eastwood's movie, "Bronco Billy" (1980). I see that it's become a meme and has made the makers of a YouTube about the song quite famous. Press PLAY if you want to find out about this old song and a long forgotten Folk singer of the 1960's. Rayzor
Prohibition was around the time of the early recordings. I can see the white eye idea making alot of sense. Moonshine running was huge and it was rampant in the south. "Where did you come from..." was to display the success of illegal booze. That was always my take when I was a DJ. Playing this song (Rednecks version) ad nauseum I figured out the lyrics. To me it was never about slavery (I'm Canadian, we didn't have slavery) so I just associate it with prohibition. Neat to see this.
