cpride09
i was just having a discussion with my brother about Jethro Tull and he went on to say that the flute poisons rock. what do you think?
Steel2Velvet
If musicianship or instrumental virtuosity counts for anything in rock & roll, then one cannot discredit Ian Anderson because he doesn't pluck at a bass or some other stringed instrument. This man's flying fingered tonal accuracy and vanguard musical stylings belong alongside any other groundbreaking event in a genre noted for pushing the boundaries of convention. Uncle Joe
Correctamundo! And, if you wanna hear some "solid Ted, 'nuff said" flutin' check out some of Herbie Mann's R&B covers like "Knock On Wood". Way cool!
Aunt_Acid
I like everything I've heard by Jethro Tull, and I also love Focus. Anyone who likes JT should check them out.

Jazzcat
Don't forget flute use in Nights in White Satin by the Moody Blues, Moondance by Van Morrison and a few Chicago tunes as well.
Jazzcat
The "Push Push" album was in a lot of record collections in the 70's. Hubert Laws also had some rock/fusion elements in some of his stuff.
Batman
A Hendrix song called 'if 6 was 9' had a flute solo, but I really didn't like it. It was just a bunch of random notes, played fast. I don't like that song too much, but like most of his other stuff
edna
"California Dreaming" has a great flute solo. As for JT, I don´t know, I like the "Bourrée", but I can´t stand Ian Anderson´s voice...
MuzikTyme
I couldn't imagine Stairway to Heaven without the flute. Nor Strange Way by Firefall. How about the flute in many of The Marshall Tucker Band's songs? There're no rules when it comes to playing music. Every instrument has it's place, depending on the musician. Although, the subjective opinion of the individual will sometimes limit their own appreciation of variety.
edna
I agree with you, Muzik... I think the bad thing is when someone pretends to be a vituoso and insists to cheer up our ears with his... flute... sometimes it´s bothering... but other times it´s really beatifull! MuzikTyme
This discussion reminds me of individuals that claim the keyboard poisons rock. I guess they've never heard Deep Purple, Queen, Traffic, Boston, ELP, Styx, Yes, Foreigner, etc., etc. Why even the jaw harp has it's place. Just listen to the intro to Black Sabbath's Sleeping Village. To mentally quarantine an instrument is basically the action of a closed mind. Anyone that claims an instrument poisons rock simply has limited tastes. A shame because there is much music to appreciate, music which integrates a variety of instruments. Rock should never have limitations or better yet, music shouldn't be held back.
XXX
Whoa Couldn't have phrased it better myself - esp. the whole keyboard thing since I'm a big fan of SynthPop.
Aunt_Acid
I didn't think there was a flute in Stairway To Heaven. I forgot who mentioned it, but California Dreamin' does have a really cool flute solo. Also, I haven't heard anything else by either of them, but I have the Dan Fogelberg/ Tim Weisberg album "Twin Sons of A Different Mother." I really like that one, and it has some great flute. MuzikTyme
My suggestion is to consult an audiologist, soon.
Aunt_Acid
Well, I just checked the songfacts for STH. What do you know, flutes and recorders.
MuzikTyme
Ah, don't believe me, huh? Like I said, the only thing you need to consult is an audiologist. I never would have thought a person didn't know what a flute sounds like. Learn something new everyday I tells ya! ::
