rkfan413
Forgive me if this topic has been discussed already, but I was wondering what everyone's favorite war protest song is. If you don't have a favorite protest song, then what's your favorite song written for a specific generation?
_jr_
Well, I've always been fond of "Signs" by the Five Man Electrical Band. It's sort of a protest song. Judging some by their appearance. Excluding some because of their status in life.
behindblueeyez
The first one that comes to mind is "We're Not Gonna Take It Anymore" by Twisted Sister, the only song of theirs I've heard. "Eve of Destruction" by Barry McGuire is a good war protest song as well... if I'm thinking of the right song...

XXX
You guys wouldn't know of them, but Los Guaraguao were a protest band from Venezuela that made some very popular protest songs. Thing is, it was at a time and a place where political dissent wasn't taken lightly that when the lead singer died from an automobile accident everyone jumped to the conclusion that it was a political assassination. Marco Antonio Solis, a famous singer from Mexico (who fronted Los Bukis), made a cover of one of their songs, "Las Casas De Carton" (lit. "The Houses Of Cardboard"). Good tuneage, if you're open-minded enough to listen to it. The songs usually speak of the people there being oppressed by the "yankees," so it may not go well with this or any crowd here, but one has to look at this from a historical context: Most of the civil wars in Central and South America were funded by billions of US dollars along with training and weaponry... Addictedtoclassic
Well, this is not a war protest song, but it is one of my favorite "protest" songs. I love the emotion behind it. Hand Me Down World (Winter) Anybody here see the noise, see the fear And commotion, I think we missed it Anybody here see the love, see the hate Being motioned... (Chorus) Don't Give me no hand me down shoes Don't Give me no hand me down love Don't Give me no hand me down world Got one already. I love The Guess Who! I think a good protest song (not really a war protest song) would be Won't Get Fooled Again.

Addictedtoclassic
My favorite Guess Who song is "No Time". "No time left for you... On my way to better things I found myself some wings Distant roads are calling me" Buffalo Springfield - "For What It's Worth" is a song about a protest, but it's not necessarily a protest song. You and I in a little toy shop buy a bag of balloons with the money we've got Set them free at the break of dawn 'Til one by one, they were gone Back at base, bugs in the software Flash the message, "Something's out there" Floating in the summer sky 99 red balloons go by. 99 red balloons floating in the summer sky Panic bells, it's red alert There's something here from somewhere else The war machine springs to life Opens up one eager eye Focusing it on the sky Where 99 red balloons go by. 99 Decision Street, 99 ministers meet To worry, worry, super-scurry Call the troops out in a hurry This is what we've waited for This is it boys, this is war The president is on the line As 99 red balloons go by. 99 Knights of the air ride super-high-tech jet fighters Everyone's a Silverhero Everyone's a Captain Kirk With orders to identify To clarify and classify Scramble in the summer sky As 99 red balloons go by. As 99 red balloons go by. 99 dreams I have had In every one a red balloon It's all over and I'm standin' pretty In this dust that was a city If I could find a souvenier Just to prove the world was here... And here is a red balloon I think of you and let it go.

Jenny
I don't remember the singer, but it's a late '60s song: War...uh..what is it good for? Absolutely nothin' Say it again War...uh..what is it good for? Absolutely nothin' Springsteen remade it on his live '75-'85 album. Was it Edwin Starr? Also, "What's Going On?" by Marvin Gaye: You see, war is not the answer Only love can conquer hate You know we've got to find a way To bring some lovin' here today
Uncle Joe
Jen, never doubt yourself. It was indeed Edwin Starr. And regarding Gisela's "love one another right now"...it was origianlly done by The Mitchell Trio on their first album after Chad Mitchell left the group to go solo (and was never heard from again...lol). A few years later a group called The Youngbloods covered it and had a huge hit with it. Anyone remember The Youngbloods appearance on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show? The band didn't like the stage set-up and refused to play. Carson said something to the effect of "they'll never be heard from again". He was absolutely right.
