Mike
Just watched this again this last weekend. I just can not get over the feeling this film has. It's incredible how natural the characters are in this film. I know that was the whole idea with a documentary style, but it just comes off so warm and personal. I feel like it's a part of my own life because music and cruising was so important in my late teen too. This film captures an era of American youth that I actually got to experience also in the late seventies and early eighties. The wall to wall music was ground-breaking and avante garde and the use of music as a means to tell the story was brilliant - just brilliant! Lucas is incredible for making this film, a staple of American youth and a phenomenon is the automobile as a social vehicle as well as geographical one. Washing and waxing your ride and then showing it off has been popular for decades, the use of music and the automobile together is something that can not be replace by anything! I know there are folk on this message board; both young and old who can relate to the "cruising" and for those that don't know what it like, to have a girl look at your ride, and smile with approval, or know what it's like, to race someone out on some abandoned road just to prove you could, for those who, who just missed out on this incredible ritual in life - I give you - American Graffiti
XXX
Richard Linklater made a film that was sort of similar to American Graffiti in capturing its essence: Dazed And Confused
