eatthatquestion
Soft Machine, The United States Of America, Gong, NEU!, Tangerine Dream, Ash Ra Tempel, Brian Eno, Roxy Music, Curved Air, Van Der Graaf Generator, etc. etc etc. All these bands are are mostly old prog and eccentric styled music, music that sure does take you places. Sparks also rocked as well as The Residents. Frank Zappa is highly underrated and pretty much forgotten.
Danielj
Roxy Music is fairly popular around these boards. I like them and our XXX is an avid fan.

MindCrime
I've heard of most of the bands in the initial post, but they are underrated as far as originality is concerned. Another good one to list & credit is Kraftwerk, one of the biggest inspirations behind Electronic music.

Try sayin THAT three times fast :: - Roxy Music RULZ! - Neu! ist gut. I only have their first album, though. I prefer Einsturzende Neubauten 'cause they cover a wider range of Noise. - Holger Czukay, Brian Eno, and Robert Fripp!
