For six months after the Pearl Harbor attack, the Japanese Navy vanquished every military force it encountered, from France, to Britain, to the Dutch. However, the Dolittle raid on mainland Japan showed that Japanese were not invincible. The Battle of the Coral Sea stopped the invasion of New Guinea and the neutralization of Australia. The remnants of the U.S. Navy Pacific fleet were to be decoyed to Alaska, and Midway was to be occupied as a base for another attack on Pearl Harbor. Code breakers pieced together the campaign against "AF." and The Sleeping Giant ended Admiral Yamamoto's "wild run" across the Pacific.
