Puzzled, he could only muster "What?"

"I said I'm not calling anyone. Well, that is to say, I may not call anyone. It depends on if you can satisfy my curious nature." As she said this his state of bewilderment only grew.

"I'm sorry, ma'am. I don't..." he tried to find the words, but came up empty.

"It's simple," she bagan, "I'll ask you some questions and all you have to do is be honest with your answers."

He tried this new twist on for size and it seemed that as tight it may feel, the price was right, "What would you like to know?"

She looked out the kitchen window to the sight of the sun only hours from its peak. "You mentioned the police are after you. Why?"

He was taken aback by the woman's sudden change of tone.

"You cut straight to it, don't you?"

"Yes, I do. Answer me honestly."

Her new razor-like tongue was frightening. "I didn't do anything bad, if that's what you're asking. It's kind of long and boring."

"Fair enough," her voice had softened again, "How about telling me that boring story?"
