New category: songs that mention other songs

The example above wouldn't fit the category.

The song "Morning Glory" only contains the words "tomorrow never knows", but it isn't referring to the Beatles' song directly.

The line for that lyric is "Tomorrow never knows what it doesn't know too soon".

The line before that says "Another sunny afternoon, walking to the sound of my favourite tune", but the singer doesn't say what song that is.

I don't know if there is many at all.

I've only heard a couple of songs that do, but I can't recall which ones they were off hand.

"Happened on a Saturday Night" by Jason Michael Carroll

"So she left Bobby standin' all alone and empty handed, as the band played 'Why Lady Why'"

references the song "Why Lady Why" by Alabama.

"All Summer Long" by Kid Rock

"Singing Sweet home Alabama all summer long" references "Sweet Home Alabama" by Lynyrd Skynyrd

"Old Alabama" by Brad Paisley

Rock And Roll Heaven ~ Righteous Brothers

[Chorus]

If you believe in forever,

Then life is just a one-night stand.

If there's a rock and roll heaven,

Well you know they've got a hell of a band, band, band.

Jimmy gave us rainbows,

And Janis took a piece of our hearts,

And Otis brought us all to the dock of a bay.

Sing a song to light my fire,

Remember Jim that way,

They've all found another place, another place to play.

[Chorus]

Remember bad bad Leroy Brown,

Hey Jimmy touched us with that song.

Time won't change a friend we came to know.

And Bobby gave us Mack the Knife,

Well look out, he's back in town.

They'll all be there together

When they meet in one big show.

[Chorus]

There's a spotlight waiting

No matter who you are

Cause everybody's got a song to sing,

Everyone's a star

(Everybody's got to be a star).

Short Fat Fannie (1957) - Larry Williams

Tired of slippin' and slidin' with a long tall Sally

Peekin' and a hidin', duckin' back in the alley

Don't wanna rip it up, don't wanna dance with Annie

I've got a brand new lover name is Short Fat Fannie

One day while I was visit'n at Heartbreak Hotel

That's where I met Fannie and she sure looked swell

I told her that I loved her I'd never leave

She put her arms around me, gave me fever

She's my tutti fruiti, I love the child so

She watch me like a hound dog everywhere I go

Whenever I'm around her I'm on my p's and q's

She might step on my blue suede shoes

Well at a honky tonk party just the other night

Fannie got jealous and she started a fight

'Cause I was dancin' with Marylou

I had to call Jim Dandy to the rescue

Short Fat Fannie she's my hearts desire

Short Fat Fannie sets my soul on fire

On Monday we were married on Blueberry Hill

Now we're so happy and I love her still

[instrumental Interlude]

She's my feedback tutti fruiti and I love the child so

She watch me like a hound dog everywhere I go

Whenever I'm around her I'm on my p's and q's

She might step on my blue suede shoes

Well at a honky tonk party just the other night

Fannie got jealous and she started a fight

'Cause I was dancin' with Marylou

I had to call Jim Dandy to the rescue

Short Fat Fannie is my hearts desire

Got the kind of lovin' sets my soul on fire

Short Fat Fannie well I love her so

I'll never let Short Fat Fannie go

And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda (1971) - Eric Bogle

...And they sent me away to the war

And the band played Waltzing Matilda

Having a Party (1962) - Sam Cooke

Everybody's swinging

Sally's doing that twist now

if you take request, I....

I got a few for you

play that song called Soul Twist

play that one called I Know

don't forget the Mashed Potatoes

no other songs will do

Wow! There's more than I thought. I'm glad you brought it up, ECC.

  to everyone finding them and posting them here.

I'm really liking this thread and looking forward to seeing what else is out there. Keep 'em comin'.

I think I'm gonna have to start listening to the lyrics a little closer and maybe keep a post-it note pad in the car to write a song down if I hear one. :headphones:

"Calling Elvis" - Dire Straits

Calling Elvis - is anybody home

Calling Elvis - I'm here all alone

Did he leave the building

Or can he come to the phone

Calling Elvis - I'm here all alone

Well tell him I was calling just to wish him well

Let me leave my number - heartbreak hotel

Oh love me tender - baby dob't be cruel

Return to sender - treat me like a fool

Calling Elvis - is anybody home

Calling Elvis - I'm here all alone

Did he leave the building

Or can he come to the phone

Calling Elvis - I'm here all alone

Why don't you go get him - I'm his biggest fan

You gotta tell him - he's still the man

Long distance baby - so far from home

Don't you think maybe you could put him on

Well tell him I was calling just to wish him well

Let me leave my number - heartbreak hotel

Oh love me tender - baby dob't be cruel

Return to sender - treat me like a fool

Calling Elvis - is anybody home

Calling Elvis - I'm here all alone

Did he leave the building

Or can he come to the phone

Calling Elvis - I'm here all alone

An even better category is finding an artist who mentions another of their own songs in the lyrics.

For example 'California Dreamin' is mentioned in Creeque Alley by Mamas & the Papas

Take Me Bak 'Ome in Skweeze Me Pleeze me by Slade

California Girls in Do it Again by Beach Boys

Spinnin Around in In Your Eyes by Kylie

The Young Ones in Saviours Day by Cliff Richard

Chinatown in Killer on the Loose by Thin Lizzy

My Generation in 5.15 by The Who
