Carl Posted October 24, 2014 Report Posted October 24, 2014 We all know movies with twist endings: The Crying Game, The Sixth Sense... But every now and then a song comes along that drops a bombshell at the end. Two examples: 1) "Two Lovers" by Mary Wells - we learn at the end that the two lovers are, in fact, one person. 2) "Love Vigilantes" by New Order - a war story told from the perspective of a soldier returning home, it turns out that he is actually dead. What are some other songs that have these twist endings?
Northernpopquizzer Posted October 24, 2014 Report Posted October 24, 2014 My Girl Bill by Jim Stafford, very quirky ending.
Brad_M Posted October 25, 2014 Report Posted October 25, 2014 "Escape (The Pina Colada Song)" - Rupert Holmes SongFacts Song Lyrics Video
Northernpopquizzer Posted October 25, 2014 Report Posted October 25, 2014 What about 'Save Your Kisses For Me' by The Brotherhood of Man? Also got a quirky ending.
bluesboy Posted October 25, 2014 Report Posted October 25, 2014 An old one... The Beatles - I Want You (She's So Heavy)
Brad_M Posted October 26, 2014 Report Posted October 26, 2014 That song only has an abrupt ending. The lyrics don't give you a surprise ending.
bluesboy Posted October 27, 2014 Report Posted October 27, 2014 Well then, how 'bout this song. That Man - Nappy Brown
Zabadak Posted October 27, 2014 Report Posted October 27, 2014 My Girl Bill by Jim Stafford, very quirky ending. Amazing - that is the song that popped into my head when I saw the topic title!
Zabadak Posted October 27, 2014 Report Posted October 27, 2014 There is I'm The Urban Spaceman by The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band. The song is about a guy who, it turns out at the end, doesn't exist...
JumboXL Posted October 28, 2014 Report Posted October 28, 2014 Memphis Tennessee, that great classic of Chuck Berry: "Marie is only six years old, information please Try to put me through to her in Memphis Tennessee"
JumboXL Posted October 28, 2014 Report Posted October 28, 2014 I love the last line of Lola, by The Kinks. "I'm glad I'm a man, and so is Lola....". Is Lola also glad? Is Lola also a man? Excellent text by Ray Davies.
_Laurie_ Posted November 18, 2014 Report Posted November 18, 2014 Diary by Bread.....thinks she's writing about him only to find out it's about someone else...
OLD 55 Posted November 18, 2014 Report Posted November 18, 2014 Some good ones there. I always feel sorry for that guy Laurie; but I suppose he shouldn't be reading someone else's Diary. Here's one that's 60 years old ...the last line reveals all. The Naughty Lady Of Shady Lane - Dean Martin Lyrics The naughty lady of shady lane had hit the town like a bomb The back fence gossips ain't been this good since Mabel ran off with Tom Our town was peaceful and quite before she came on the scene The lady has started a riot disturbing the suburban routine Oh the naughty lady of shady lane has the town in a whirl The naughty lady of shady lane me oh my oh what a girl You should see how see carries on with her admirers galore She must be giving them quite a thrill the way they flock to her door She throws those come-hither glances at every Tom, Dick and Joe When offered some liquid refreshment the lady never never says no Oh the naughty lady of shady lane has the town in a whirl The naughty lady of shady lane me oh my oh what a girl The things they're trying to pin on her won't hold much water I'm sure Beneath the powder and fancy lace there beats a heart sweet and pure She just needs someone to change her then she'll be nice as can be If you're in the neighborhood stranger you're welcome to drop in and see The naughty lady of shady lane so delightful to hold The naughty lady of shady lane she's delectable quite respectable And she's only nine days old
OLD 55 Posted November 18, 2014 Report Posted November 18, 2014 Tar And Cement - Verdelle Smith (1966) A beautiful song about a young woman who leaves her small home town for the Big City. But her life is lonely there amongst all the 'tar and cement. Years later she decides to return to the lush green meadows of Home. But sadly they have been turned into a 6 lane Highway of 'tar and cement'.
edna Posted November 19, 2014 Report Posted November 19, 2014 It's a famous song from Adriano Celentano (italian singer) many singers cvered it in many languages. I like this song... Wiki
OLD 55 Posted November 19, 2014 Report Posted November 19, 2014 Thanks dear Elena. I've seen those Italian words beside the English title before, but didn't know that !
OLD 55 Posted November 19, 2014 Report Posted November 19, 2014 Silhouettes - The Rays (1957) two strangers who had been two silhouettes on the shade said to my shock "you're on the wrong block" A better ending would have been if he'd rushed in and shot them in a rit of fealous jage. Oops !
miamisammy29 Posted November 19, 2014 Report Posted November 19, 2014 MUSICAL INTERLUDE "Timothy" - The Buoys Trapped in a mine that had caved in And everyone knows the only ones left Were Joe and me and Tim When they broke through to pull us free The only ones left to tell the tale Were Joe and me Timothy, Timothy Where on earth did you go? Timothy, Timothy God, why don't I know? Hungry as hell, no food to eat And Joe said that he would sell his soul For just a piece of meat Water enough to drink for two And Joe said to me, "I'll have a swig And then there's some for you" Timothy, Timothy Joe was looking at you Timothy, Timothy God, what did we do? I must have blacked out just around then 'Cause the very next thing that I could see Was the light of the day again My stomach was full as it could be And nobody ever got around To finding Timothy Timothy, Timothy Where on earth did you go? Timothy, Timothy God, why don't I know? Timothy
Shawna Posted November 19, 2014 Report Posted November 19, 2014 Here's one that's 60 years old ...the last line reveals all. The Naughty Lady Of Shady Lane - Dean Martin Hi Darryl! My mom has this one on 45 still. We used to listen to it on our little record player. I never knew it was Dean Martin... nor do I remember ever hearing that last line... certainly changes the entire song!

OLD 55 Posted November 20, 2014 Report Posted November 20, 2014 Hi Darryl! My mom has this one on 45 still. We used to listen to it on our little record player. I never knew it was Dean Martin... nor do I remember ever hearing that last line... certainly changes the entire song! Hi dear Shawna. My Mom had it too on a 78 rpm record. There were a couple of other versions, but Dino's is the best I think.
OLD 55 Posted November 20, 2014 Report Posted November 20, 2014 The old Sammy the Shocker. I've never heard it before Brad ! I don't think our AM stations played that one.
Zabadak Posted November 20, 2014 Report Posted November 20, 2014 "A Forest" by The Cure Quite a scary, ghost-story type of song. He's trying to find a girl but, at the end, "the girl is never there"...
Zabadak Posted November 20, 2014 Report Posted November 20, 2014 "Under Your Thumb" by Godley & Creme A similar story to the above: a man meets a woman on a train, read a newspaper and he "recognised the picture of the woman who was dead"...
Shawna Posted November 21, 2014 Report Posted November 21, 2014 Not sure if it qualifies, but I always thought Harry Chapin's "Taxi" had a good twist... albeit more in the middle...
