Tim Hauser of The Manhattan Transfer Dead At 72

Tim Hauser, the founder of the Grammy-winning vocal group The Manhattan Transfer, died of a cardiac arrest in Sayre, Pennsylvania. The group, in the midst of a tour, was scheduled to perform in Corning, N. Y. when Hauser was admitted to hospital with pneumonia.

Hauser founded the group in 1972 by recruiting Janis Siegel, Laurel Masse and Alan Paul. In the late 70's, Masse was injured in a car accident and was replaced by Cheryl Bentyne.

The group was an extremely popular live act, but only managed one Top Ten hit with their version of The Ad Libs "Boy From New York City".

The group's vast repertoire included songs fom a variety of music genres including doo-wop, jazz, R&B, swing and Latin.

He is survived by his third wife and two children.
