Thanks for your thoughts Ian, Ray and Chutz. Marty Robbins is (was)my favourite country singer too. He and Johnny Cash are the only ones whose albums I had ! We especially loved his late 50s songs here in Australia. A White Sport Coat was #1, She Was Only Seventeen #2, and The Story Of My Life and Just Married were both #3.

Chutz mentioned the "one song per artist". This does make it hard to choose at times. Marty was a tough one, but I did go for "wicked Felina" because of the story line and no repeat chorus/ hook as Ray pointed out. A classic that deserved its 1960 Best Country, and later Hall Of Fame, Grammys ! Ian, I managed to squeeze in the 'big three' crooners. Perry Como is my favourite.

10. I CAN'T STOP LOVING YOU - RAY CHARLES (#1, 1962)

I don't think too many would argue with this beautiful song being included in my Top Ten. Winner of Grammys for best R & B Record in 1962 and later nominated to the Grammy Hall Of Fame. It was the top rated song of the year, spending 5 weeks at #1 in June/July 1962. Written by Country singer/songwriter Don Gibson it was first released by him in 1958 as the 'B' side of his big Hit 'Oh Lonesome Me'.

9. TAKE GOOD CARE OF MY BABY - BOBBY VEE (#1, 1961)

I may get a few 'knockers' for placing this so high, but I loved it the first time I heard it and still do. To me it is the perfect Pop song, written by the great team of (the late) Gerry Goffin and Carole King. It spent 3 weeks at #1 in September/October 1961.

8. 16 CANDLES - THE CRESTS (#2, 1959)

What can I say ? With superb lead vocals by the great Johnny Maestro, this is the second best Doo-Wop song of all time ! It peaked at #2 in February 1959. Written by Luther Dixon and Allyson Khent. Luther Dixon co-wrote a number of other songs, notably 'Baby It's You' and 'Boys' for The Shirelles and both later covered by The Beatles.

7. JOHNNY B. GOODE - CHUCK BERRY (#8, 1958)

Well, there was always going to be a Chuck Berry song in my Top Ten. This one gets the nod. Elected to both the Grammy and Rock and Roll Halls of Fame, peaking at #8 in June 1958. Written by Chuck of course; I believe he did more for early Rock'N'Roll than any other artist/songwriter - except Elvis and he never wrote any songs, despite receiving co-writing credits on some he recorded.

6. SLEEP WALK - SANTO & JOHNNY (#1, 1959)

My all time favourite Instrumental. Spent two weeks at #1 in September 1959. Covered by many other guitarists, but this is the real deal. Written by the brothers Santo and Johnny Farina and their Mother, Ann.

5. CRYING - ROY ORBISON (#2, 1961)

I'm trying to think of suitable superlatives to describe this man with the amazingly multi-octave, unique voice. Nobody else could sing a sad song like him. Crying is deservedly in the Grammy Hall of Fame and peaked at #2 in October 1961. Written, as were so many other great songs, by Roy himself.

I'm not surprised at all to see "the Genius" in the top 10. But for me, the first song I associate with Ray Charles is his version of Hoagy Carmichael's "Georgia on My Mind" (#1, 1960). (And on that note, an R.I.P. to Meshach Taylor of "Designing Women", which used "Georgia" as its theme song.)

Of course, all of these are subjective and that's what makes this fun.

I'm glad to see both Chuck and Roy in the top 10. If Elvis was "The King" of rock and roll, Chuck Berry was "The Crown Prince". He has written so many great tunes, I would have had a very difficult time picking just one. Good choice though Darryl. As for Roy Orbison, he did have a wonderfully distinctive voice and Cryin' dislays it to great effect.

Thanks for your thoughtful comments Jeff and Ian.

Here's my #s 2,3 and 4.

4. THE GREAT PRETENDER - THE PLATTERS ( #1, 1956)

My choice for the greatest Doo-Wop / R & B song of all time. This film clip is from the 1956 Movie "Rock Around The Clock" which had Alan Freed getting the 'pro Rock 'N' Roll - let the kids have fun' message across + some great music.

It was written by their Manager Buck Ram - a white man managing a 'black' group, but he didn't exploit them as some others in the Industry did with their charges. He also co-wrote Only You and other hits for them. The Group revolved around Tony Williams and his soaring tenor voice. Funny, when he went solo in 1959 he never had another hit ! The song was #1 for 2 weeks in February 1956 and was later elected to both the Grammy and Rock And Roll Halls of Fame.

3. DON'T BE CRUEL - ELVIS PRESLEY (#1, 1956)

Backed with 'Hound Dog' this was the most successful of Elvis' records, spending 11 weeks at #1 in August to October 1956. Both songs were elected to the Grammy Hall of Fame. Don't Be Cruel has always been my favourite Elvis song. Written by a young Otis Blackwell, Elvis was credited as co-writer. :smirk: Don't mention The Colonel.

However, Elvis was.....THE KING !

2. RUNAWAY - DEL SHANNON (#1, 1961)

Why is this song so infectious ??? I never tire of listening to it. It was going to be my #1, but sentiment took over. This magnificent song was #1 for 4 weeks in April/May 1961 and elected to both the Grammy and Rock And Roll Halls of Fame. Co-written by Del and Max Crook. The Perfect, perfect Pop song.

A live version 'bubbled under' at #112 in 1967, and it enjoyed further popularity when a 'modified' version of it was used as the Theme Song in the TV series "Crime Story" (1986-88).

I'll bet you can guess what my #1 will be now !

(888 Views ! Many of my Asian friends would consider that extremely Lucky. I'll put our Lotto entry in tomorrow).

Thanks Ray. :headphones:

What do you think of my #1 ???

1. (WE'RE GONNA) ROCK AROUND THE CLOCK - BILL HALEY AND HIS COMETS (#1, 1955)

The song that started it all. Who would have thought that this slightly chubby with a receding hairline, 30 year old, Country singer and his Band would produce the song which is generally regarded as the birth of the Rock and Roll era ? (Taken from 9th July 1955 when it reached #1 on Billboard's Best Seller Chart, and stayed on Top for 8 weeks). Inducted into both the Grammy and Rock And Roll Halls of Fame. Written by Jimmy DeKnight and Max Freedman.

The version I've got linked is from the Movie "Rock Around The Clock" and is slightly different to the original, which was first released as a 'B' side in 1954 with moderate success. It was only after the song was featured in the movie "The Blackboard Jungle" that it started to take off.

'Children under 16' were restricted from seeing the Movie. I was 14 and big for my age, so I got in to see it. No I'Ds in 1955.

Definitely a deserving tune! Alot of bands used that song as a cookie cutter for their own sound. I really can't argue about the top ten... other than Elvis being rated so high.

I understand that he had several hits, girls swooned in his presence and sold a gazillion records, but Justin Beiber is doing the same thing and I severely want him to just die already! :jester:

Overall: fantastic list!

Just teasing Golen Oldie! For me I liked the young "spunky" Elvis. He was a tour-de-force for sure and made people take notice. I just didn't care for his later works. Just my opinion, but as I said earlier: it's a fantastic list

even though most of you weren't born at the time. :)

Now I'm working on 1964 - 1969 when Pop and Rock Music came of age ! It'll probably only take me a couple of months, or so...

Great list, Darryl! I never really got into a lot of the fifties music, but there is no question that some amazing songs came from that decade. IMO, the best artists from the 50's were Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Carl Perkins, Elvis Presley and Roy Orbinson. The music they made can stand with the best that came from subsequent decades.

I agree with Ray about Elvis. His later work lacks the passion and exhuberance of his 50's songs. And I'm glad that Runaway made it into the top 10. It's in the top 100 of my favourite pop/rock songs of all time.

That's a good list. Lots of good songs. Although I would have put Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis and Eddie Cochran in the top ten. And as a few said Elvis just seemed to finish a little too high in the top ten. He belongs in there somewhere though. That's a good bunch of songs.

Thanks Guys. If I'd chosen my list just by artist he'd have been my #1.

I feel so sorry for Elvis. That string of B that gradually became C grade movies - a few good ones - that the Colonel signed him up for must have eventually broken his spirit. (Admittedly, the 3/4 million dollars each he receved for most of them was a lot of money + the subsequent 'soundtrack album'). He was at his best performing live. If you can catch his 1968 "Comeback Special" - probably be on YouTube - I think you'll like that.

Also, have you ever seen anyone in his early forties look as bad as he did in the latter part of his career ? They'd send him out on stage like a trained animal - forgetting the words to songs he'd sang many times before, shuffling around the stage, or mainly sitting at the piano. And yet his fans still loved him. He must have been in a nightmare world of pill popping and a killer 'diet'. A tragedy. If he had been an animal the ASPCA probaly could have stepped in and saved him.

When the U.S.Post Office decided to feature him on a postage stamp they conducted a public poll in 1992 regarding the design - "Young Elvis" or "Mature Elvis" ?

The public decided on the 'young' and that's the vibrant, energetic, charismatic Elvis we should remember. I hope, in death, he found 'Peace in the Valley'.

Very nice Darryl!....I'm looking forward to seeing the 1964-1969 list. My oldest sister is 13 years older than me. I grew up listening to 60's tunes because of her. Many memories of listening to music when she had to drag me along to the beach, movies, etc...There is one song that brings back a special memory...I'm curious to see where that will place...And nope, not saying what it is... :P
