OLD 55's One Song Per Artist Top 500 1955- 1963

OLD 55

Recommended Posts

Hi Dear Laurie. :) There were some great singers around in the 50s. Tony Bennett is still alive - I'm not sure if he's still performing though !

I remember my Dad giving me 6 shillings (old currency) to buy Al Martino's "Here In My Heart" record to give Mum as a Birthday present in 1952.

Music can stir many memories.

I've nominated Susie-Q this week in the Top Ten. I don't think I've ever seen a picture of Dale Hawkins before. I thought he was black 'soul' and that's a compliment. Funny how you get an impression in you mind of a singer. I've got the 45 of 'Hand Jive' somewhere. I'm glad you think the songs are getting better Chutz !

Laurie, you're probably surprised that I didn't place 'At Last' higher. I'm sure it would be in some people's all time Top Ten.

486 views to date. I hope remembering these great old songs brings back happy, maybe sometimes sad but fond, memories to those who know them.

I remember buying the 45 of the Poni Tails 'Born Too Late' when I was on holidays with my parents (over 55 years ago) and having to wait two weeks until I got home to play it on my record player. 1958 was the year that singles started being issued in stereo.

Marty Robbins = my fave country singer. His lyrics were like listening to a condensed book instead of the usual "drink my troubles away" types. Too often singers depend on a single line "hook" to repeat in hopes of keeping you listening. Marty sang a story that kept you listening because you wanted to hear how it turns out. "Big Iron" is another example. Even with the catchy chorus, one will listen to the story being told. Probably one of the best storytellers.
