Carl
Saw part of a documentary about Billy Joel's trip to Russia during the Cold War. He's entrenched behind his piano for most of his set these days, but the guy could really let loose when the spirit moved him, and the footage from Russia shows him doing a very spontaneous stage dive followed by a bit of crowd surfing. Peter Gabriel had been doing this for a while, but Gabriel did it at a very specific spot in his set, and the crowd knew it was coming. Check out this clip to see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=knqhdNWuLJo The stage dive is one of the required elements of punk rock, but were Gabriel and Joel the first to do it in an arena rock setting?
