edna
Thank you Young55 for calling me a doll!!! Teresa, I used to get SLC from time to time because I grew up in Argentina and you had to ask for these magazines... my father would get me "Pilote" but not SLC nor Mademoiselle Age Tendre... Right now my husband is listening to the music in the mac file... it´s all Brassens, Hardy, Dutronc, etc... By the way, Françoise Hardy sang "I´ll be seing you" with Iggy Pop on his 2002 album "Clair-Obscur"... now she just released a new one produced by her son... and now, that´s got nothing to do with this thread, my kitty is walking on the board and I can´t fire her, she´s so cute... Otokichi
Ever since it appeared on The Peter Moon Band's "Malie" album in 1980, Frank Kawaikapuokalani Hewett's song about Lehua blossoms has been a favorite of Hula dancers and Hawaiian musicicans. Kawailehua'a'alakahonua (Or, Ka Wai Lehua 'a'ala Ka Honua) Ke iho la ka ua (The rain descends) Halihali na lehua a luna (Beating lehua blossoms from above) Helele'i pua i ke kai (Falling into the sea) Hula le'a na lehua i ka moana (The lehua blossoms dance playfully upon the waves) He kupa la ka ua i ke kai (The rain is no stranger to the sea) Ke ho'i hou e aloha mai (As it returns once more to share its love) He mele nou e ku'u lani (A song for you, my heavenly one) Kawailehua'a'alakahonua (The lehua waters [the rain] that perfume the earth) For residents and visitors alike, it's the hands that tell this story with eloquence. :guitar:
edna
Has anyone mentioned Lio yet? I especially remember their song Banana Split :happybanana: oops, sorry. A couple of their other songs are: Amicalement Votre and Amoreaux Solitaires . Oui mon ami, il est français. Oh, how could I have skipped this post?? Lio is very good, she´s half French half Portuguese (?)... she is also an actress now, and has seven or eight kids from different fathers or so... "Amoureux Solitaires" was very beautifull and also sad... "Les brunes comptent pas pour des prunes" was another big hit of hers... I have two or three Lio albums and it´s pretty and non-stupid pop. I love French music, obviously...and I also like Roberto Carlos (Brezil) and Argentinian music, as well as the Soviet Army Choirs (no joking!), as these were the popular russian songs my mother and grandparents used to sing... blind-fitter
What an interesting question! Nice one! really set me thinking... In no particular order...(with possible exception of "number one") Barbara: L'Aigle Noir (French chanteuse of 1960s,wonderful voice. This one's very poignant for me, for one reason and another) Marlene Dietrich: Sag Mir Wo Die Blumen Sind X-Ray Pop: La Machine a Rever (french indie, kinda like a precursor of Stereolab) Ofra Haza: Im Nim Alu (fantastic, and I mean, FANTASTIC singer of "Yemenite Songs") Bebel Gilberto: Tanto Tempo (the whole album- Brazilian bossa nova, beautiful voice) The Ex: Hidegen Fujnak a Szelek (Dutch alt-noise band, doing version of Eastern European folk-song) Single Track: Regarde (french alternative rock ca. 1985) Oberkampf: Couleurs sur Paris (French equivalent of early Clash) Nina Hagen: Wenn Ich ein Junge Ware (German late 70s New-Wave) Cocteau Twins: Victorialand album (not sung in any specific foreign language, but no recognisable English either!) edna
The Ketchup Song. Just kidding. I like those stupid songs, I like the Ketchup song -what´s its name?? I should know, I live in spain... - and I surely like the Numa Numa song. The first one is sung in... nothing, it´s like if it was in English but it means nothing, the second one is Romanian. Red Fish
Does it count as a foreign language if it has a horribly garbled Japanese attempt at English in it? Couple favorites... Farin
Was ist das, Farin? Never heard of it... I think you mean "Vamos a la playa"? (or don't you know the Gorillaz' song either?) That's an 80's Euro-Disco song that I just thought of in the back of my head. After further investigation, Its from "Righera" an italian pop duo (and I thought it was spanish, sorry ) Vamos a la playa ~ Righera Chorus: Vamos a la playa Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh Vamos a la playa Oh, oh Vamos a la playa La bomba estallò Las radiaciones tostan Y matizan de azul Chorus Vamos a la playa Todos con sombrero El viento radioactivo Despeina los cabellos Chorus Vamos a la playa Al fin el mar es limpio No mas peces hediondos Sino agua fluorescente
edna
It´s Spanish, Farin... maybe the Italian guy sings in Spanish. I don´t know who Gorillaz are, you mean the cartoons? Didn´t know they sing in Spanish. I love old Italian singers, Mina, Celentano, Nicola diBari, etc.
Farin
An Italian band singing Spanish, who would have thought after even further searching I found out they had another hit: "No Tengo Dinero", again in Spanish Yes I mean the cartoon band Gorillaz. The song is a collaboration with Ibrahim Ferrer of the Buena Vista Social Club (he does the actual singing) Gorillaz ~ Latin Simone (Que Pasa Contigo?) Mirate a ti mismo Enfrentalo Que pasa contigo? Mi hermano Ven animate
Levis
I have a feeling I've mentioned these before, but I cannot find where, so maybe it's my imagination. There's a song 'Sayonee' by a Pakistani band called Junoon that I like. Then there's this light little number called 'Pari' by Sunita Rao I first learnt about Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan through the song 'Afreen afreen.' Another Pakistani band called Jal had a song last year called 'Woh Lamhe.' Very popular and I tried not to like it since everybody likes it, but... it's nice song! What to do...
