Oscar-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead Sunday of an apparent drug overdose at his Manhattan apartment, a law enforcement source told FoxNews.com.

The NYPD responded to the apartment in the West Village shortly after 11 a.m., the source said.

A friend found his body in the apartment and phoned police. Hoffman was alone in his bathroom when he was discovered with a needle in his arm, the law enforcement source said.

"We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Phil and appreciate the outpouring of love and support we have received from everyone," his family said in a statement. "This is a tragic and sudden loss and we ask that you respect our privacy during this time of grieving. Please keep Phil in your thoughts and prayers."

He has since gone on to appear in notable movies like "Scent of a Woman," "Boogie Nights," "The Big Lebowski," "Almost Famous," "Capote," "Mission Impossible III" and "Moneyball."

Hoffman had checked himself into an East Coast rehab facility for heroin in May 2013, TMZ reported.

Hoffman had long-ago battled drug problems, but began struggling again in 2012 after 23 years of sobriety, the report said.
