How The iPhone Changed Songwriting

For some songwriters, the iPhone is their best friend. They can instantly record their ideas, jot down lyrics, or look something up any time the device is within reach. It's quite an enabler and also levels the playing field - Keith Richards only wrote "Satisfaction" because be had a portable recorder in his hotel room; he rolled out of bed, played the riff, went back to sleep and woke up to his masterpiece in the morning (which he had completely forgotten about).

So how has the iPhone hurt songwriting?

I'm editing Greg's Ville Valo interview right now, and he brings up an interesting point. Before Steve Jobs gave us this electronic godsend, bands would often play early versions of songs live long before they recorded them. They could spend years tweaking the arrangement of a song, so by the time it went to tape, it was honed to perfection. Ville says this is what HIM did with "Join Me in Death." Now that kids watch concerts through their screens and record the action, bands can't experiment like this, since their song would inevitably be stolen.
