RonJonSurfer
..(Reuters) - Legendary musician Jimi Hendrix was named the greatest guitar player in history on Wednesday by Rolling Stone magazine in a list compiled by a panel of music experts and top guitar players. "Jimi Hendrix exploded our idea of what rock music could be: He manipulated the guitar, the whammy bar, the studio and the stage," said Grammy-winning guitarist Tom Morello in the magazine, citing Hendrix's "Purple Haze" and "The Star-Spangled Banner" as key tracks. Hendrix is joined by the likes of Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Keith Richards, Jimmy Page and Pete Townshend among the top 10, in a list laden with rock 'n' roll icons spanning decades. The panel of experts recruited to vote for their favorite guitar players included musicians such as Lenny Kravitz, Eddie Van Halen (who was voted No. 8), Brian May and Dan Auerbach from The Black Keys, along with a selection of Rolling Stone's senior writers and editors. The experts also weighed in on their favorites, with Pearl Jam's Mike McCready calling Eddie Van Halen "a master of riffs" and Joe Perry praising Jimmy Page's "vision of how to transcend the stereotypes of what the guitar can do." The full list will be featured in a special issue with four special covers of Van Halen, Clapton, Hendrix and Page, and will be on newsstands and online at www.rollingstone.com on Friday. Rolling Stone's top 10 greatest guitarists follow: 1. Jimi Hendrix 2. Eric Clapton 3. Jimmy Page 4. Keith Richards 5. Jeff Beck 6. B.B. King 7. Chuck Berry 8. Eddie Van Halen 9. Duane Allman 10. Pete Townshend (Reporting and Writing by Piya Sinha-Roy; Editing by Bob Tourtellotte) ..
Carl
A very safe list. Kind of surprised they didn't throw a wildcard like Randy Rhoads in there. Interesting that 3 of the top five were Yardbirds - When I asked their drummer Jim McCarty to rank them, he put Beck at #1, but RS had him getting the Yardbird bronze. night2day
Lots of links, lots of opinions and mostly, lots of talent! I have a point and it is: There is no way on Earth that i could ever choose my favorite guitarist. There is simply too many great ones to choose from, IMO. miamisammy29
Oh, please! Blackmore at 50?! He's Number One! Knopfler at 44?! Should be WAY higher! And not even a mention of Rick Neilsen?! Come on, wake up, poeple!
night2day
ssssnort...sorry for my snoring. But thank you for waking me up. I didn't see Tony Iommi on the list. What's this world coming to?
miamisammy29
Iommi's at #25 (right between Brian May and Angus Youg). Wow, I had to go back and double check. That WOULD have been a miscarriage of justice.
RockyRaccoon
Personally, I'd put Beck ahead of Clapton and just below Page. Beck amazes me. And I'd put Page number one all-time, Beck number two.

JumboXL
In the early 70's readers of the New Musical Express chose Jan Akkerman (guitarist of the band Focus) as the best guitarist of the year, beating a.o. Clapton and Santana. Is he in the list?
JumboXL
Rory Gallagher on 57. Humpffff.
JumboXL
I agree. I'll play "Midnight Rambler" from "The Brussels Affair 1973" to underscore this statement.

TheLizard
Just got the issue, I think the one I was thinking of before was best guitar songs. Not too bad of a list, I thought. I mean these kind of lists are all subjective, but they covered most of the bases. I might have messed with the order, but I couldn't think of anyone off the top of my head that I would have included that they missed.
Jess Grant
Ugh, that Rolling Stone list is so dull! It does not contain innovators so much, just, very adept players... I mean, where is Frank Zappa?!?!
