MTV VMA's

I am embarrassed to say I actually watched some of it. I watched it with my sister who couldn't believe I hadn't heard of all the rappers there. I didn't see Hoobastank, and have only heard one of their songs (I didn't like it) but my sister saw, and said they were horrible.

Anyways, the part I did like was a three-uet with Lenny Kravitz, Alicia Keys, and Stevie Wonder doing "Higher Ground". Its a really good song, and Alicia was good singing it, as was Stevie, and Lenny did good on the guitar. Maybe I will give him a listen on Kazaa!

I stopped watching MTV the day "Yo MTV Raps" debuted. Seriously.

I didn't watch it, but I will admit I read the results in the paper this morning. I am happy to report that I honestly did not recognize a single name or song. :coolio:

My musical integrity remains intact.

I haven't seen it yet since I've been busy, but knowing MTV they will air the same thing over & over again. Last year Missy Elliot won for best video of the year & the two years before that it was Eminem. I doubt I will think that highly of any of the award winners, but it's usually a good show, with it's typical comedy routine.

Was Higher Ground originally by Stevie Wonder? Or was it a cover of the Chili Peppers?

Oh sweet Daniel. You seem to take such a genuine interest in music and I appreciate that more than you know. I love all of these "younger" posters getting into Floyd, the Beatles, etc. And I do understand that these forums are frequented mainly by "rockers". But sweet, dear Daniel, there are whole other musical genres out there. You truly can't appreciate one without the others. Please get to know Stevie...you won't regret it.

I hope this does not come off as being condescending...that is not my intention. Daniel, I think you are great, and I wouldn't have responded so passionately if I didn't think you are ready to expand your horizons.

Peace,

Peaches

Lol you didn't answer the question! But while we are on the subject of of broadening horizons, do you have any reccomedations for me? This guy Victor I know made me a CD of bands that I need to get into more. It has like Steppenwolf, ACDC, Van Halen, The Cure, Beck, Blind Melon, The Police, Stone Temple Pilots, U2, GnR, REM, Lenny Kravitz, Live, RHCP, Counting Crows, Eddie Money, and Michael Jackson. It has each of their biggest hits on it. Any other band reccomendations, or good songs by those bands?

Steppenwolf

Peaches, thanks. I really do love all of the Stevie Wonder songs I have heard.... i guess I just never really thought. As for other than Rock, Blues are number two. Love B.B. King and The Paul Butterfield Blues band. So On and so forth.

Oh and folk. Bob Dylan rules

Reggae too, I have a few Bob Marley records.

I also love, whatever styles they belong to, Leonard Cohen, Van Morisson.

I guess I just don't express ALL of my musical interests on these forums because as you said, they really are more "Rocker" forums.

I promise you though, I will try to find more Stevie Wonder stuff and listen to it.

Thanks again,

Daniel

That list is a little out of my tiny sphere of listening (!), but I love the Cure - listen to 'Standing on a Beach', it's a compilation of all their early singles and is fantastic - some of my favourite songs ever. Their best album is Pornography. As for U2, go for their early stuff like Boy and Unforgettable Fire. Joshua Tree is a classic album too.

I thought there were 2 standout performances:

Alicia Keys/Lenny Kravitz/Stevie Wonder and Christina Aguilera/Nelly.

The great thing about bringing out Stevie and doing one of his truly great songs (Anyone see Hi Fidelity? - "Do you even know your daughter!") is that a younger crowd can get to know him. He's one of the greats and should be appreciated.

Christina Aguilera is proving to be a spectacular performer. She really means it when she sings and can absolutely wail. With MTV under the Janet Jackson restrictions, the Flapper Dresses and Zoots Suits were brilliant.

Some observations:

What did Chaka Khan swallow that made her sound like an American Idol reject? She's better than that - I wonder if she did it on purpose.

Viacom clearly wanted to plug Comedy Central, but they managed to make both John Stewart and Dave Chapelle look incredibly unfunny. Chapelle may have been collared by the restrictions, but Stewart's stuff was taped - someone should have stopped it.

Shaq looked like he was in great shape. Let's not bash the US Olympic Team, who at least went to Greece to represent instead of hanging out in Miami.

I was surprised the Kerry daughters got booed, but it proves that people don't respond well to political messages when they are out for entertainment. That was a bad idea.

Carl, you were right about Chaka...she was not up to her usual standards. I was so excited to see her come out on stage, and then so disappointed when she started to sing. But we all have bad days. Most of us have the luxury of having our bad days in private, not on TV. I still love you, Chaka! Here is a link to a story about Chaka's voice strain... clicky clicky

Definitely. And thats pretty sad knowing that Dave Chappelle is pretty funny any time he says "B*tch"

Also, Jon Stewart trying to connect with the MTV younger audience didn't seem to succesful. I couldn't imagine Jon listening to any of those. He is much funnier than this, what a shame.
