Nostalgic/reflective songs

Today I heard a song... and I can't even remember what it was (dern memory) but it got me to thinking about songs that are of a reflective nature... not regretful, just sort of wistful, a remembrance or somesuch. I came up with a few.

"When You Close Your Eyes" ~ Night Ranger

It could have been done in a different kinda way

But that ain't you, you play tough when you play

We're older now, I betcha still think about me

"Stone In Love" ~ Journey

In the heat with a blue jean girl

Burning love comes once in a lifetime

Oh, the memories never fade away

Golden girl, I'll keep you forever

"Even Now" ~ Barry Manilow

Even now, when I come shining through

I swear I think of you

And how I wish you knew, even now

"What Might Have Been" ~ Little Texas

Sure I think about you now and then

But it's been a long, long time

I've got a good life now, I moved on

But when you crossed my mind

I try not to think about what might have been...

Any others?

Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town ~ Pearl Jam

I seem to recognize your face

Haunting, familiar, yet I can't seem to place it

Cannot find the candle of thought to light your name

Lifetimes are catching up with me

All these changes taking place

I wish I'd seen the place, but no one's ever taken me

Hearts and thoughts they fade, fade away

Hearts and thoughts they fade, fade away

I swear I recognize your breath

Memories like fingerprints are slowly raising

Me you wouldn't recall, for I'm not my former

It's hard when you're stuck upon the shelf

I changed by not changing at all, small town predicts my fate

Perhaps that's what no one wants to see

I just wanna scream "Hello!

My god, it's been so long, never dreamed you'd return!"

But now here you are, and here I am

Hearts and thoughts, they fade away

Nightswimming ~ R.E.M.

Nightswimming deserves a quiet night

The photograph on the dashboard taken years ago,

turned around backwards so the windshield shows.

Every street light reveals a picture in reverse

Still it's so much clearer

I forgot my shirt at the water's edge

The moon is low tonight

Nightswimming deserves a quiet night

I'm not sure all these people understand

It's not like years ago

The fear of getting caught

The recklessness in water

They cannot see me naked

These things they go away

Replaced by every day

Nightswimming,

remembering that night

September's coming soon

I'm pining for the moon

And what if there were two

Side by side in orbit around the fairest sun?

The bright tide forever drawn

Could not describe nightswimming

You, I thought I knew you

You, I cannot judge

You, I thought you knew me

This one laughing quietly

Underneath my breath

Nightswimming

The photograph reflects

Every street light a reminder

Nightswimming

Deserves a quiet night

Deserves a quiet night

Bob Seger

Night Moves

"I awoke last night to the sound of thunder, how far off, I sat and wondered. Started hummin' a song from 1962. Ain't it funny how the night moves. When you just don't seem to have that much to lose, strange how the night moves.... With Autumn closin' in...."

Wow! Very nice category regarding music! There are so many good songs that it is hard to name just one particular one. Probably 95% of the music I admire is attributed to my dad.

I think he put headphones on me whilst cutting my umbiblical cord . ;)

Though, he fought in Vietnam and told me that nothing in life is worse than having to deal with hand to hand combat and seeing the people you've trained with fall right in front of your eyes. My dad said that was terrible but he also said the most terrible thing was surviving, coming home where he thought he would be safe and accepted- only to be spit upon by protesters that didn't even have a clue as to why they spit! Very sad and it made my dad even sadder.

Anyway, my dad said this song helped him get through it.

Glory Days - Bruce Springsteen

"Glory days, well they'll pass you by

glory days, in the wink of a young girl's eye

glory days, glory days"

Cherry Bomb - John Cougar Mellencamp

"livin, laughing with our friends

holding hands meant something baby

outside the club cherry bomb

our hearts were really pumping"

These Are The Days of Our Lives - Queen

"Those were the days of our lives

The bad things in life were so few

Those days are all gone now, but one thing is true

When I look, I find, I still love you"

This Is The Time - Billy Joel

"This is the time to remember

'cause it will not last forever

These are the days to hold on to

'cause we won't although we'll want to"

Your Dad sounds like a winner...in many ways.

Caroline No by the Beach Boys.

Where did your long hair go

Where is the girl I used to know

How could you lose that happy glow

Oh, Caroline no

Who took that look away

I remember how you used to say

You'd never change, but that's not true

Oh, Caroline you

Break my heart

I want to go and cry

It's so sad to watch a sweet thing die

Oh, Caroline why

Could I ever find in you again

Things that made me love you so much then

Could we ever bring 'em back once they have gone

Oh, Caroline no

"These Days" ~ Rascal Flatts

Someone told me after college

You ran off to Vegas

You married a rodeo cowboy

Wow, that ain't the girl I knew

Me, I've been a few places

Mostly here and there once or twice

Still sortin' out life, but I'm doing alright

Yeah, it's good to see you, too

These Days-Jakckson Browne

Well I've been out walkin'

I don't do that much talkin' these days

These days

These days I seem to think a lot

About the things that I forgot to do...for you

And all the times I had the chance to

And I had a lover

And it's so hard to risk another these days

These days

Now if I seem to be afraid ... to live the life I have made in song

Well it's just that I've been losin' ... for so long

Well I'll keep on movin' ... movin' on

Things are bound to be improvin' these days

One of these days

These days I'll sit on corner stones

And count the time in quarter tones to ten ... my friend

Don't confront me with my failures

I had not forgotten them

These Days-Jackson Browne

Disney Girls-The Beach Boys

Clearing skies and drying eyes

Now I see your smile

Darkness goes and softness shows

A changing style

Just in time words that rhyme

Well bless your soul

Now I'll fill your hands

With kisses and a Tootsie Roll

Oh reality, it's not for me

And it makes me laugh

Oh, fantasy world and Disney girls

I'm coming back

Patti Page and summer days

On old Cape Cod

Happy times making wine

In my garage

Country shade and lemonade

Guess I'm slowing down

It's a turned back world

With a local girl

In a smaller town

Open cars and clearer stars

That's what I've lacked

But fantasy world and Disney girls

I'm coming back

Love...Hi Rick and Dave

Hi Pop...Well good morning mom

Love...get up guess what

I'm in love with a girl I found

She's really swell

Cause she likes

Church, bingo chances and old time dances

All my life I spent the night

With dreams of you

And the warmth I missed

And for the things I wished

They're all coming true

I've got my love to give

And a place to live

Guess I'm gonna stay

It'd be a peaceful life

With a forever wife

And a kid someday

It's earlier nights

And pillow fights

And your soft laugh

Fantasy world and Disney girls

I'm coming back

Boys of Summer - Don Henley

"Nobody on the road,

nobody on the beach.

I feel it in the air,

the summers out of reach

Empty lake, empty streets,

the sun goes down alone.

I'm driving by your house

though I know that you not home...

And I can see you

you brown skin shining in the sun

you got your hair combed back

sunglasses on baby

and I can tell you

my love for you will still be strong

after the boy of summer have gone."

Watching the River Flow- Bob Dylan

"What's the matter with me,

I don't have much to say,

Daylight sneakin' through the window

And I'm still in this all-night cafe.

Walkin' to and fro beneath the moon

Out to where the trucks are rollin' slow,

To sit down on this bank of sand

And watch the river flow.

Wish I was back in the city

Instead of this old bank of sand,

With the sun beating down over the chimney tops

And the one I love so close at hand.

If I had wings and I could fly,

I know where I would go.

But right now I'll just sit here so contentedly

And watch the river flow."

Speaking of reflections; my dad used to always play this next song on his 12 string guitar. For lack of a better word, it was beautiful! it went something like this:

"Here that lonesome whipporwill

He sounds too blue to fly

The midnight train is whinning low

I'm so lonesome I could cry

Did ya ever have a night so long

When time kept crawling by

The moon just went behind a cloud

To hide its face and cry

Did you ever hear a robin weep

When leaves began to die

That means its lost the will to live

I'm so lonesome I could cry

The silence of a falling star

Lights up a purple sky

And as I wonder where you are

I'm so lonesome I could cry."
