Who are some people that were thisclose to musical stardom, when fate intervened to keep them in obscurity? Some examples:

Pete Best: original Beatles drummer

Henry Padovani: member of The Police who left in 1977

Ron McGovney: early member of Metallica

Simon Wolstencroft left the band "English Rose" after only one year... later they became The Stone Roses

And a year later he left the band "Freaky Party", allegedly because he didn't care for the new singer's voice... that guy was Stephen Patrick Morrissey and the band soon changed their name to The Smiths

(at least he later was a member for The Fall for 10 years ;) )

Dick Taylor left The Rolling Stones in 1962 to found the Pretty Things

Vince Clarke left Depeche Mode after their first album

Vince left DeMode and went on to form ERASURE! Him and Andy Bell are pretty far from obscure. In fact, they're currently touring

"Tin Tin" Duffy was in Duran Duran before they made it big. Good call on John Foxx leaving Ultravox! before they became the New Wave darlings everyone else knows as Ultravox :headphones:
