Stax

Ownership of the Stax legacy is in remarkably competent hands. Surprising when you consider that until recently, their catalog was in disarray and the location of their studios was a vacant lot with a marker.

The Stax glory years were the mid-'60s, when they were making money, which allowed for creative freedom, which made everyone happy. But, as any economist will tell you (but apparently not the United States government), you'd better tighten the strings when revenue dries up and keep an eye on expenses. Stax lost a lot of money when they imploded in the '70s, and the ensuing lawsuits tied up their catalog for years.

Fortunately, there is now a wonderful museum where the music was made, and the catalog is controlled by a company that is gradually getting some of the best stuff remastered and released. Both the museum and label were kind enough to answer some of our questions about Stax.
