Jerry Leiber, famous as half of the famous songwriting/production team Leiber and Stoller, died on August 22 at age 78.

My favorite Leiber-touched song wasn't a hit: Down In Mexico by The Coasters. It's filled with devilish fun and takes lots of little unexpected turns in its brief runtime. Leiber was a tireless worker (at least that's what his son Oliver told us), but his songs sounded almost effortless, like these riffs and storylines were out there just waiting to be turned into songs like "Stand By Me," "On Broadway" and "I Keep Forgettin'."

"Hound Dog," oh how he hated what Elvis did to it!

That sounds like a statement a songwriter would make long after the fact of hitting with a super-sized hit, of the caliber of Hound Dog. I'm sure he never returned a royalty check in protest.

The team of Leiber and Stoller was the prototype for all rock writers to come.

RIP, sir.
