Ken
I recently rediscovered Bobbie Gentry's "Ode To Billy Joe" and was struck by the thick, heavy atmosphere of the song. Which got me thinking about songs of that genre, and I came up with "Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia", "Hells Bells" and "Ain't No Sunshine (When She's Gone). I realize Hells Bells sticks out like a sore thumb there, but it does have a thick heavy atmosphere to it.... Any suggestions? Ken.
Carl
This is a little obscure, but the first thing I thought of: James McMurtry - "Ruby and Carlos"

Mike
I was contemplating adding the song Space oddity, when I suddenly realized, much to my chagrin, was a song markedly without atmosphere. I'll look for a thread on "songs in a vacuum".

WildChild80
I always felt Jimi Hendrix- Little Wing had a lot of atmosphere it always felt a song that floats on a cloud. Another one comes to mind is Fleetwood macs- Gypsy. Stevie Nicks voice is very "Atmospheric" Also Superstar by The Carpenters is good, but the Sonic Youth cover is atmospheric.
