1. Save Me — Aimee Mann ([smaller]Magnolia[/smaller]) This is not a favorite song of mine outside of the brilliant way it was used in the movie*.

2. Super Fly — Curtis Mayfield ([smaller]Super Fly[/smaller]) Freddie's Dead is another winner!

3. Foggy Mountain Breakdown — Flatt & Scruggs & the Foggy Mountain Boys ([smaller]Bonnie & Clyde[/smaller])

4. Knockin' On Heaven's Door — Bob Dylan ([smaller]Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid[/smaller] )

5. Stuck In the Middle With You — Stealers Wheel ([smaller]Reservoir Dogs[/smaller]) Some folks just can't listen to this one without 'flashbacks' of the scene where it is used.

6. Imperial March — John Williams ([smaller]The Empire Strikes Back[/smaller]) More a part of the score than a soundtrack 'song', but certainly a hella effective piece.

7. Born To Be Wild — Steppenwolf ([smaller]Easy Rider[/smaller]) To beat the dead horse: I'm not a 'true biker' (nor a martial arts authority), but while Born To Be Wild doesn't necessarily cause me to think of Easy Rider, the vice versa does apply.

8. You Can't Always Get What You Want — The Rolling Stones ([smaller]The Big Chill[/smaller] ) Wish I had time to view a lot of these films over again, but wasn't it the introduction of this song by the characters that made it significant ?

9. The Windmills of Your Mind — Noel Harrison ([smaller]Thomas Crown Affair[/smaller])

10. On the Dark Side — John Cafferty & the Beaver Brown Band ([smaller]Eddie and The Cruisers[/smaller])

And honorable mentions: Eye of the Tiger, Come Saturday Morning, The Girl Can't Help It, The Harder They Come, Theme from Shaft .

* [smaller] from wikipedia: [/smaller]

"Mann gained greater public recognition in 1999 ... when she contributed eight songs to the soundtrack of (Paul Thomas) Anderson's Magnolia, including the Academy Award and Grammy-nominated song, Save Me. Anderson deliberately worked from Mann's lyrics to create the film's characters and situations."

Before I vote, I would just like to clarify that the songs I vote for are not necessarily my favorite songs on the list (as would be the case in a Regular Top Ten). I have used several factors to narrow down my picks. For example: how much I like the song, how much I like the movie, how well the song fits into the movie, how much the song makes me think of that particular movie, and how much the song actually meant to the movie.

And no, I don't believe that the song had to be written specifically for the movie to be a part of this category. However, my Number One pick would contradict my last statement.

1. Mrs. Robinson - Simon & Garfunkel

2. Surrender - Cheap Trick

3. Jump Into The Fire - Harry Nilsson

4. Gimme Shelter - The Stones

5. You Can't Always Get What You Want - The Stones

6. Raised On The Radio - Ravyns

7. Dead Man's Party - Oingo Boingo

8. Born To Be Wild - Steppenwolf

9. Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen

10. Shama Lama Ding Dong - Otis Day & the Knights

I concur. And I'd like to add that while I know most of the songs on the list, I didn't know a lot of the movies, so my picks are limited to those movies that I have seen and could attest to how well I thought it was used.

With no further adieu...

1. Danger Zone - Kenny Loggins (Top Gun)

2. Mrs. Robinson - Simon & Garfunkel (The Graduate)

3. Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen (Wayne’s World)

I also tried to go based off of how well the songs were utilized in movies. And Scorsese is the master of using songs for his films.

I like almost all the songs that were nominated, but I chose these because I can't think of them without thinking of the movie they were featured in.
