Lea
Saxophones? Two of my favorites: Harden My Heart - Quarterflash Take the Long Way Home - Supertramp May not be jazz-rock or funk or fusion but when I think saxophone, those two song pop right into my mind
edna
Thank you, Lea... I don't know much about funky bands, I thought of an equivalent of Chicago or BS&T in the 2000... If you have any ideas...
RonJonSurfer
How about something like Dance to the Music by Sly and the Family Stone?
Carl
The Ohio Players might be good for that as well. Over in the Funk/Soul thread, we discovered a band called Hudson County, which sounds crazy good but mostly unavailable: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnhnqI92kWU Bim Sala Bim songfacts
bluesboy
Blodwyn Pig put out a couple of albums of jazz-rock back in the late '60s and early '70s.

bazooka
Does your friend have any ‘for example’ favorites? To me, "jazz-rock/fusion" and "funk" seem like different kinds of things. Here’s a couple somewhere in the mix that you might check out. Orient Express – Zawinul Syndicate Pappy Check – Medeski Martin & Wood The more improvised jazz (with some notable exceptions) is not really my personal cup of tea. I favor horn-heavy Funk, but really good stuff is in short supply after the 1980s. I’ll see if I can find something more recent than what's in the Classic Funk/Soul thread.
