I didn't put the Jann Arden song "Insensitive" on this list because I don't like the song, but I have a story about it:

When I was a DJ at a Top-40 station, I thought I was soooo funny when I talked it up like this -

Here's Jann Arden with Insensitive... you know, my girlfriend told me I'm insensitive. Well, I think that's what she said, I wasn't really paying attention. :)

Bring on the Dancing Horses - Echo & The Bunnymen (1985)

Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want - The Smiths (1984)

Pardon me whilst I go back to my tortured and misunderstood youth as I smoke clove cigarettes, dress all in black, and listen to sad bastard music.

I just wanted to mention this comment in the context of this kind of music is the exact content of the song Sumisu by Farin Urlaub

our days were dark

our shirts were black

we stood in the corner of our schoolyard all the time

and we exchanged deeply disappointed glances

and every time we were sad (we were sad quite often)

we went to your place

and listened to The Smiths

Our nights were lonely

Our hearts were heavy

There was no one able or willing to understand us

And so we got closer

And every time we were sad (we were sad quite often)

I put my arm around you

And then we listened to The Smiths

Sometimes also to The Cure or New Order

But mainly to The Smiths

btw, just like R.E.M.'s Shiny Happy People this is another example of an attempt at satire that backfired, because the guy Mr Urlaub wrote it for/about (who was a big The Smiths fan) was allegedly deeply moved and thankful for the song :D

1. Australia - The Kinks (1969)

2. 40,000 Headmen - Traffic (1968) A landmark composition for the Winwood/Capaldi songwriting team, "(Roamin' Thro' the Gloamin With) 40,000 Headman" -- and that is the official title -- is a true classic. Lyrically, it's a psychedelic fantasy about escapism. Although wildly [sic] thought to be a "drug" song, it's more of an evocation of a dream state. Musically, the song is built around a very simple, minor-key set of folk chord changes, with a vague Latin feel. The bridge changes to a heavy major-key progression before returning to a long fadeout that takes the listener into the ozone. One of the most evocative songs of the period, and a definite masterpiece. ~ Allmusic.com
