French Songs

Looking at it, I dont think you can credit Clau Clau with My Way... he probably contributed a couple of lines... there were other, more serious song writers involved on that .

Clau Clau was all candy floss, he spent his life doing covers of Brit and American pop songs.

Sacha Distel did that too... to some degree, whenever I think of him, I think of "Raindrops are falling on my head" ..."

The song "Seasons in the Sun"... that was a big hit way back for Canadian Terry Jacks in 1974

... it was so out of the ordinary .. a song about death.

Did n't realise at the time but its a Jaques Brel song ! "Song of a dying man" !

( what a depressing theme for a song !

but it gets you emotionally every time.)

( interesting... Terry Jacks... Jaques Brel ! )

Cloclo actually wrote "Comme D'Habitude" with Jacques Revaux (helping with the music) and Gilles Thibaut (he wrote the French lyrics).

Of course, he wasn't a brilliant songwriter but at least that song is his song... Paul Anka wrote the English lyrics and changed the meaning: Cloclo's song is sad and depressive while Sinatra's very positive.

Sacha Distel didn't write all of his songs though he did write the one I like the best: "La Belle Vie" was written by him and Jean Broussolle (lyrics) in Franch. But he gave it first to Tony Bennet, who had a hit with "The Good Life" (lyrics in english by Jack Reardon). I don't know if he co-wrote his other hits such as M.Cannibale or Incendie à Rio, but he also sung Gainsbourg ("Mamadou") and many covers of French and foreign songs...

And he was an amazing jazz guitar player.

Terry Jack's covers of Brel's "Le Moribond" or "If You Go Away" ("Ne Me Quitte Pas") are not bad...

I still prefer Bowie's "Amsterdam"...

There was a recent cover of France Gall's Link (written by Gainsbourg) called "Chick Habbit" by April March.

I also think so.

one French song I really like is

Le vent nous portera ~ Noir Desir

(even though I know the story behind the band and that the singer can't really be considered to be a role model :/ )

Je n'ai pas peur de la route

Faudrait voir, faut qu'on y goûte

Des méandres au creux des reins

Et tout ira bien là

Le vent nous portera

Ton message à la Grande Ourse

Et la trajectoire de la course

Un instantané de velours

Même s'il ne sert à rien va

Le vent l'emportera

Tout disparaîtra mais

Le vent nous portera

La caresse et la mitraille

Et cette plaie qui nous tiraille

Le palais des autres jours

D'hier et demain

Le vent les portera

Génetique en bandouillère

Des chromosomes dans l'atmosphère

Des taxis pour les galaxies

Et mon tapis volant dis ?

Le vent l'emportera

Tout disparaîtra mais

Le vent nous portera

Ce parfum de nos années mortes

Ce qui peut frapper à ta porte

Infinité de destins

On en pose un et qu'est-ce qu'on en retient?

Le vent l'emportera

Pendant que la marée monte

Et que chacun refait ses comptes

J'emmène au creux de mon ombre

Des poussières de toi

Le vent les portera

Tout disparaîtra mais

Le vent nous portera

Martin, I liked Noir Désir very much. it was my fave French Band.

(it was, sadly...somehow -and for private reasons-I was very much involved, back in the sixties, with the first tragedy at the Trintignant's, they lost their first child and Nadine even made a film about that. "Ça N'arrive qu'aux autres". Song by Michel Polnareff). So when they lost the remaining daughter it was quite impressing... )

If you go away.... another Jacques Brel song..

wow his songs hit you emotionally every time

he was one hell of a song writer.

Born in Belgium but he seems to have spent a lot of his professional life in Paris .

He died at the early age of 49 in 1978

I suspect it was the fags that did it ....

as also in the case of Serge Gainsbourg

(though Serge made it to age 62 !)

(they were almost exact contemporaries.. Jacques born 1928 Serge born 1929 )

Actually, "Je T'Aime etc..." is a song I hate...

You should read Gainsbourg lyrics. His "calembours" (puns) are brilliant.

Those songs BF posted are gainsbourg songs (sauf Bébé Requin) but he also wrote many, many other stuff...

I will post "L'Accordéon" for you if you speak Franch... :)

Brel is a genius too, I was a bit too short in my statement... "La Valse A Mille Temps"...!!!

As for France Gall, she was there quite before Marianne Faithfull. In fact, Marianne faithfull was rather the answer to Françoise Hardy (Marianne& Mick, Françoise&Jacques Dutronc)

Looks like you are fluent in Spanish, French and English then Edna .... ! quite a talent !

Can you speak any other languages ?

Thank you, goldfinger... :) Yes, I speak Russian too...

(it's a family thing... we're all from different places  )
