goldfinger
No doubt he was a great singer... and performer but did he do a lot of song writing ?
edna
Not really, in my opinion. Here's a link with links: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Songs_written_by_Marvin_Gaye

edna
He was killed by his father... ...they were arguing about some girl...
goldfinger
He was a great vocalist... writer... and from distant memory seeing a TV show...... think he was pretty hot on the keyboards too. The guy was a Motown legend..... Was he the black Elvis ? Elvis ... Lennon.... Marvin.... all died in their 40s ... all died far too young. Interesting that he was the son of a Minister of the Church.... think the Pointer Sisters were daughters of a Minister too !
skybluesky
He was killed by his father... ...they were arguing about some girl... That's putting it mildly, but there wasn't a girl. Apparently the argument was over business documents between Gaye's parents. Gaye's father had always been highly religious and thought Marvin had lost his way spiritually. He was abusive most of Marvin's childhood. Gaye had been depressed for many years, even contemplating suicide.

Well, of course it wasn't just a girl... but I remember the news back in 1983 (or 4? or 2? ) when it happened and there was also a fight due to a common lover. Lovely family... Carl
A lot of his hits were written by the Motown heavyweights, but he did write Got To Give It Up and Mercy Mercy Me.
MuzikTyme
I cringe whenever I think someone that could produce this would meet such an untimely and tragic end. One of soul's best singers of all-time, IMHO.
goldfinger
Yes.... you d think he wrote ... "Heard it on the Grapevine".... but he did nt It was a perfect song for Marvin and his vocal style. I guess he was more of a performer and a great singer than a writer...( bit like Elvis )
MuzikTyme
I guess he was more of a performer and a great singer than a writer...( bit like Elvis ) Nice analogy. Though, I tend to think Mr. Gaye was even more a singer than Elvis was performer. Loved them both, nevertheless ~
