Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater

Recommended Posts

We used to have a guy on here called Cyberdemon who hated pretty much everything. When we asked him what he did like, his answer was Dream Theater.

He had a pretty good point - they are an outstanding group who can make lots of others look like lightweights.

The genre is "Progressive Metal," and they're cool with that.

When Dan talked to Mike Portnoy, he spoke at length about his involvement with Alcoholics Anonymous. Very interesting first-hand account of what it's like going through the 12-steps and how the mind of an alcoholic works.

Wow,another good interview  Dream Theater is very serious music  I only wish you would have asked about all the time signature changes  This is one on the bands that I can't ever figure out (musically) But,a very good interview :)

Dan became Jeff's, his brother's, and two of his son's hero when I told them about this interview.

Could I have been their hero for some of the interviews I've done? Nooooo... far too pedestrian. In fact, the very night I told them about this interview, the 4 of them sat in the living room with Dream Theater on in surround sound and had themselves a little concert. :beatnik:

Make it "formerly of Dream Theater." Mike is leaving the group he founded in 1985:

A Message from DREAM THEATER:

“To all of our loyal fans and friends: It is with profound sadness--and regret--we announce that Mike Portnoy, our lifelong drummer and friend, has decided to leave Dream Theater. Mike's stature in the band has meant the world to all of us professionally, musically, and personally over the years. There is no dispute: Mike has been a major force within this band.

While it is true that Mike is choosing to pursue other ventures and challenges, we can assure you that Dream Theater will continue to move forward with the same intensity--and in the same musical tradition--that you have all helped make so successful, and which is truly gratifying to us. Fans and friends: File this episode under ‘Black Clouds and Silver Linings.’ As planned, we begin recording our new album in January 2011, and we'll follow that with a full-on world tour. ‘The Spirit Carries On.’

All of us in Dream Theater wholeheartedly wish Mike the best on his musical journey. We have had a long and meaningful career together. It is our true hope that he finds all he is looking for, and that he achieves the happiness he deserves. He will be missed.”
