Welcome to Songfacts! :)

Here are the lyrics if anyone else wants to take a stab at this:

there’s a card game in the courtyard

and the winner loses all

and the judge checks his supper

it’s so small

and the hills are gray with trouble

and the dry spring gathers dust

your lover’s crying in the valley

she lost her drugs

but there is a road to glory

somehow headin’ in the past

behind the gold, behind the treasure

behind the mask

in comes a team of four white horses

and a lady with night black hair

and she looks to be such a fine one

but is she really there

I’ve got to know

I’ve got to know

I’ve got to know

Jeez, back in the time when this song was written, people were strung out on so many drugs thre's no telling what in the heck this means.

Imagery to me would indicate it's about the world in general, how we're all striving to achieve to the point of everyone losing everything. So the only salvation is to go backwards into the past - before you gained all the fame and glory.

beg pardon? :shades: ;)

As an original Missouri ozarks girl .... and fan of the Daredevils (as well as knowing their backgrounds), I think Shawna has pretty much got it right, but I feel the "road to glory" doesn't have anything to do with fame, achievements, or being on the road performing. I think it just means the dream of traveling back to a simpler time and place, in contrast to the craziness that the early 70's lifestyle brought to all of us. ... "headin’ in the past" ... just heading back to the real you.

Pleased to meetcha, Aslanspal. I gotta tell you, I've got a soft spot in my heart for any and all Ozark Mountain Daredevil's fans. You're a welcome addition here.

Slight variation Shawna in the lyrics

There's a card game in the courtyard

and the winner loses all

when the judge checks his supper

it's so small

and the hills are grey with trouble

and the dry spring gathers dust

your lover's crying in the valley

she lost her trust

(HARP SOLO)

but there is a road to glory

somehow hidden in the past

behind the gold, behind the treasure

behind the mask

then comes a team of four white horses

and a lady with night-black hair

and she looks to be such a fine one

but is she really there

I've gotta knooooooooow

I've gotta knooooooooow

I've gotta knooooooooooooooooooooooooow.............

that verse there portends trouble at home ...a woman usually in this sentence of trust has to do with a man...I lost respect for him

and the hills are grey with trouble

and the dry spring gathers dust

your lover's crying in the valley

she lost her trust

(HARP SOLO)

the hills are back home

dry spring gathers dust...the guy is neglecting the relationship and now it gathers dust at what once used to be a spring.

the reason she lost respect for him

I think its the travails of the road and its excitement ..a gamble ...you win but lose it all

what you lose is back home

the lady night black hair...team of four white horses

night and day...night trumps white or controls the light...tough one.

please visit Randles Facebook perhaps he will answer you...but it has been a long time ..I doubt it.
