S2V's Personal Top Ten

Recommended Posts

The only name I didn't originally put into the magic hat was mine. So, with no more to pull out I guess this week is:

Steel2Velvet's Personal Top Ten

I can say I have listened to every nomination this round of PTTs; that's over a thousand songs! I am so glad I did. My musical taste's evolution - and this list of songs - have been rejuvenated thanks to the influence of your PTTs. In choosing these songs I even sensed some of the SFers in a few of them. I indicate those in comments below.

You TubePlaylist for first 12 songs

It's Been Done - Angela McCluskey

What'd I say - Rare Earth There is thread about cover songs better than the original on this site; I thought of this song immediately when responding. It's asking a lot to better a Ray Charles original, but this song has everything a great cover needs to help forget the past!

I Wanna Be Adored - The Stone Roses

Tupelo Honey - Cassandra Wilson Her jazz infused songs never fail to impress me and this cover is great! If you love a blues violin like me, you'll like this version.

I Found A Love - The Falcons This is a 2-parter. Before he was a solo act, 19 year old Wilson Pickett was lead singer in this band. How his voice held up all those years singing this way, no one will ever know!

Espero - Fuja Lurdes In sharing Brazilian music that I love so much, I had to include this band which I have been photographing for three and a half years. They are finding national success now.

Wiser Time - The Black Crowes

Bright Lights/She Came In Through The Bathroom Window - Matchbox 20

Thorn Tree In The Garden - Derek and the Dominoes

Afirika - Angelique Kidjo From one of my all time favorite albums recorded in Bahia, which studies the relationship of Brazilian music to its African roots.

When It's Cold I'd Like To Die - Moby featuring Mimi Goeste

Summer Wages - Ian Tyson First song on my list to reflect my love for exemplary country music. This Canadian singer/songwriter has been called the cowboy poet. His lyrics are sublime.

Grooveshark Playlist for remainder of songs

Take Saravà - Silvia Torres from the album Brasileiro

A Case Of You - Joni Mitchell

Richland Woman - Jim Kweskin and the Jug Band when 20 year-old unknown Maria Muldaur was the featured singer

That Thing You Do - The Wonders pure pop, but how many single songs can carry an entire great movie?

Be OK - Ingrid Michaelson this song sounds like Radhi (Levis) to me

Keep On Tryin' - Poco

It Never Entered My Mind - Jane Monheit I am an unabashed saxophile. This song features that smokey sax that puts me in a reflective mood of nights and romance.

Telling Me Lies - Trio if there are singing angels, they certainly must sound like the final harmonic in this song

Johnny Got A Boom Boom - Imelda May

Waters Of March - Lani Hall probably the most poetic song here ("the wrist of a stump") this is written by Bossa Nova pioneer Tom Jobim, brilliantly translated to English and performed by an ex "Brasil 66" member and present wife of Herb Alpert

Already Gone - Sugarland this sounds like Lucky to me

Broken Doll - Paloma Faith

Super Clean Jean - The Marmalade from one of my fav albums, "Reflections Of The Marmalade," I wore the vinyl out when I was a young man

Bonny Portmore - Loreena McKennitt I love the misty timelessness of Celtic music and Canadian McKennitt has a voice that paints this story of an ancient shelling of a Scottish castle

Six Days On The Road - Taj Mahal

I Wonder If I Care As Much - Everly Brothers from their biographical album "Roots," the brothers as perhaps you have never heard them before

Don't Blame Your Daughter - The Cardigans

Bruises - Chairlift

Heart Of My Own - Basia Bulat

You Have Been Loved - Sia when CS 1987 (Chris) made his all-Australia PTT list it got me curious to look for more songs from Oz and I discovered the only singer I have twice on my list. This love-lost-and-gone song has so much emotion "I've drunk my last beer with you."

I'm Only In It For The Love - John Conlee one of the few country songs with a sharpened horn section, this puts me in mind of Bluesboy

That's All - Eliane Elias a jazz trio from Brazil, Eliane plays piano and sings this as if she is a saxophone - note her phrasing and timbre

Read My Mind - The Killers this puts me in mind of BlindFitter

Despedida - Celso Machado a cleverly worded song of a man in a hurry to get to the port where his love waits so he claps to a ferry boatman to wake up and cast off

Pictures - Sia great example of singing harmony with oneself, also great bass work

Jolene - Ray LaMontagne I hear MiamiSammy in this song about it being too late for a guy to go straight

I Could Fall In Love - Selena forget J-Lo and just enjoy the bass and guitar work backing up a young phenom's wonderful voice

Come Next Monday - KT Oslin see if you can visualize Tenacious Peaches singing this to a guy who did her wrong

Make Someone Happy - Sophie Milman again a great sax to take you to the penthouse to look over the lights of the city

Roll With It - Ani DiFranco the best anti-war song I've heard since the '60's

Killer Blow - Sade

Rodeo - Garth Brooks

Janta - Marcello Camelo and Mallu Magalhaes great line about nothing to do but think of one's missing love, "paper clips and blue crayons in bed"

Bubbly - Colbie Callat this puts me in mind of Jenny

Stella By Starlight - Cannonball Adderly a saxophile can't do much better than to include the 'Ball in his list!

Tatapá - Joao Bosco another from the album Brasileiro, this one features outstanding guitar work

Sweet About Me - Gabriella Clima Caution: earworm

These Friends Of Mine - Rosie Thomas dedicated to all of you who continually enrich my appreciation of music - "they sure love to sing."

Vote 'em like you got 'em!

*"Pictures, dishes and socks/It's our whole life down to one box" - Such a simple lyric but so sad and says so much. I love, love, love me some Sugarland.

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to your songs. A fabulous mix of your good old US life and your new (well not new but more recent) life in your beautiful adopted country.

I would also like to thank you for taking on the huge undertaking of overseeing this round of PTTs. I appreciate the opportunity to get to know my Songfacts family even more and you made it possible.

Smooches, honey!
