Former Giants great Lawrence Taylor was arrested at a Rockland County hotel early Thursday in connection with the rape of a 16-year-old Bronx girl, sources said.

Taylor allegedly had sex with a runaway whose rendezvous with the NFL great at a hotel in Montebello, N.Y., was arranged by a pimp, sources said.

"She was escorted to the room by the pimp" and another woman, said Town of Ramapo supervisor Peter St. Lawrence.

On the drive back to the city, the girl texted an uncle who had been looking for her since March. He, in turn, called Bronx cops who intercepted the car and rescued the girl, a police source said.

The Bronx teen was taken to a hospital for a rape examination, where she was treated for a black eye and other injuries.

It was not clear who hit the girl, but St. Lawrence said "she was being held captive" by the pimp.

Meanwhile, the NYPD alerted police in Ramapo, who sent a pair of officers to the Holiday Inn.

"Police there go to the door and knock," the police source said. "L.T. answers."

Taylor, 51, will be arraigned Thursday afternoon on a third-degree rape charge, which involves having intercourse with a minor, Ramapo Police said.

His third wife, Lynette, told TMZ.com she believes her husband is innocent and called the whole situation a "set-up."

In a bizarre twist, Taylor was initially represented by Kenneth Gribetz, who resigned as Rockland County district attorney in 1995 after The Daily News revealed he used taxpayer and campaign money to fund a kinky extramarital affair — and that he sometimes wore women's clothing and liked to call himself a “bad girl.â€

Shortly after that story hit The News' Web site, Gribetz was replaced by a top New York defense attorney, Arthur Aidala.

Taylor's former coach, Bill Parcells, declined to discuss the ex-player's legal problems. His former teammates said they were shocked and hoping the allegations were unfounded.

"We were together last weekend in St. Kitts, at a golf tournament," said Harry Carson, a former Giants middle linebacker and Hall of Famer. "He was fine. But I really don't want to say any more than that until after the press conference."

Taylor lives in Pembroke Pines, Fla., but is believed to also have a crash pad in New Jersey. He frequently drives up to Rockland County to play golf.

Little was known about teenage victim, who ran away from home in March, St. Lawrence said.

It was not clear how she wound up in the clutches of the pimp, but on Wednesday she found herself being driven to Rockland County for a romp with the legendary linebacker, the police source said.

TMZ.com said Taylor paid the girl $300 for sex.

One of the greatest football players of all time, Taylor played for the Giants from 1981 to 1993 and was a key member of the "The Big Blue Wrecking Crew."

He led a defense that that propelled New York to Super Bowl victories in 1987 and 1991.

Taylor, who recorded 142 sacks during his 13-year career, was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1999. He also competed last year in ABC's "Dancing with the Stars."

But he's also had numerous other run-ins with the law.

While still a Giant, Taylor tested positive for cocaine in 1987 and in 1988 was suspended by the NFL for 30 days, when he failed another drug test.

In his autobiography, Taylor admitted his cocaine problem went out of control after he hung up his cleats in 1993.

Taylor checked himself into drug rehab twice in 1995, only to be arrested two times over a three-year period for trying to buy crack cocaine from undercover officers.

But Taylor, who has admitted in interviews that he blew thousands of dollars on illegal drugs, has reportedly been living clean and sober since 1998.

Still, trouble continued to dog him.

The former Giant was hit in 2000 with five years of probation for filing false tax returns and for tax evasion.

Then, last November, he was arrested for leaving the scene of a traffic accident outside Miami.

You might want to change the title of the thread -- he hasn't been convicted of anything.

Even though I think all rapists should be shot in the back of the head with a .45 just to save the state some money, I still think they should be convicted first. You know, for legality's sake.
