There's a guy named Michael Patterson, who along with his wife Candace Reckinger, did 2 of the greatest videos in MTV's first decade: Take On Me and Opposites Attract.

He told us how they came together.

First, check out how the 1980 movie Altered States fits in to this:

Now, have a look at Micheal's 1981 student film, Commuter:

Eventually, this animation style was used in lots of movies, TV shows, commercials and music videos, and while the technology got better, none of them have blown us away like that a-ha video:

As for "Opposites," it's inspiration was the 1945 movie Anchors Aweigh, where Gene Kelly danced with Jerry the Mouse:

Patterson came up with MC Skat Kat, and this was the result:

Michael tells us that Gene Kelly loved it, and that he and Paula were friends.
