MindCrime
A German disco artist from 1975 - present. One of the top 25 greatest selling artists of all-time (and the only one on the list that I've never heard of.)

blind-fitter
You've never heard any of these??? "Rasputin" "Rivers Of Babylon" "Brown Girl In The Ring" "Daddy Cool" "Ma Baker" "Belfast" I quite liked some of these as a kid. I still think "Rasputin" is blinking marvellous, for one reason and another. Classic preposterous pop! They were massive in Europe in the late 70s. Levis
Aren't they the epitome of universally classic?
MindCrime
On the same note... anyone familiar with German synthpop band Modern Talking? They've also hit well over the 100 million album mark, and I don't have a clue who they are.
blind-fitter
Early 80s pop-duo. "Brother Louie" was a big hit for them, couldn't name any others. The level of success you just described is inconceivable for such unmitigated sh!te.
edna
Oh, I don't like them at all... They were quite famous but a song by them, don't know the name... I do like some Boney M...
MindCrime
I'm listening to Boney M's biggest hit "Mary's Boy Child". I've never heard this band before, but it's not bad for disco (which is my most despised genre of music)
blind-fitter
Rasputin (so you can all sing along! ) There lived a certain man in Russia long ago He was big and strong, and his eyes a flaming glow Most people looked at him with terror and with fear But to Moscow chicks he was such a lovely dear He could preach the bible like a preacher Full of ecstasy and fire But he also was the kind of teacher Women would desire RA RA RASPUTIN Lover of the Russian queen There was a cat that really was gone RA RA RASPUTIN Russia's greatest love machine It was a shame how he carried on He ruled the Russian land and never mind the Tsar But the kasachok he danced, it was really wunderbar In all affairs of state he was the man to please But he was real great when he had a girl to squeeze For the queen he was no wheeler dealer Though she'd heard the things he'd done She believed he was a holy healer Who would heal her son RA RA RASPUTIN Lover of the Russian queen There was a cat that really was gone RA RA RASPUTIN Russia's greatest love machine It was a shame how he carried on (Spoken:) But when his drinking and lusting and his hunger for power became known to more and more people, the demands to do something about this outrageous man became louder and louder. "This man's just got to go!" declared his enemies But the ladies begged "Don't you try to do it, please" No doubt this Rasputin had lots of hidden charms Though he was a brute, they just fell into his arms Then one night some men of higher standing Set a trap, they're not to blame "Come to visit us" they kept demanding And he really came RA RA RASPUTIN Lover of the Russian queen They put some poison into his wine RA RA RASPUTIN Russia's greatest love machine He drank it all and said "I feel fine" RA RA RASPUTIN Lover of the Russian queen They didn't quit, they wanted his head RA RA RASPUTIN Russia's greatest love machine And so they shot him till he was dead (Spoken:) Oh, those Russians... MindCrime
I just listened to Rasputin, I could've used those lyrics a couple minutes ago lol This band is easy to listen to and enjoy, though it's not my personal choice. I'll take your guy's word on Modern Talking though.
Farin
Boney M was the Brainchild of producer Frank Farian, who's also responsible for Milli Vanilli, No Mercy and various others as already stated VERY popular in the Disco times of the 70s and 80s fun fact: the guy who's singing isn't the guy who's dancing/performing, but Farian himself (same goes for Milli Vanilli? ) the first rule when it comes to Modern Talking is "do not listen to Modern Talking!" The second rule when it comes to Modern Talking is "do NOT listen to Modern Talking!!" and not only is the music THAT bad, Dieter Bohlen (the blonde guy, so called "songwriter", nowadays producer and judge for German Idol shows) has to be the least likable character in the music business that I've ever seen
MindCrime
I'm curious now and will now sound sample one of Modern Talking's biggest hits. edit: I wish I wouldn't have done that How the hell did this group sell 120 million records? They can't sing in tone.
JumboXL
Boney M is the act centered around Bobby Farrel. He lives in Lelystad, The Netherlands and is still active with a nostalgic disco tour. Details at http://www.bobbyfarrell.com/online/ .

MindCrime
I see Modern Talking was only big in Europe and never had a charted single in the US, I don't even know if they had released music here, despite their lyrics being released in an English version. Farin
it might seem strange, but German isn't really language #1 in German pop music... especially in the time from the mid-80s (after the New Wave / NDW) to the mid 90s there weren't that many popular German groups actually singing in German... streams from the indie scene (Hamburger Schule, eg) and hip-hop (back then that was the good stuff) changed that a bit... just wanted to say: Modern Talking always 'sang' in English... it was considered to be 'cool' and 'international'

pinkstones
I saw a video for Daddy Cool on YouTube that was linked from a forum I post on under the header "Stupidest Video You'll See All Day". I don't know what's worse -- the backing vocalists' tomahawk chop that looks like they're going to dislocate their elbows, the male singer's seizure-like dancing and gesticulating or the moaning and groaning that happen in the breakdown of the track. Yikes.
edna
You cannot understand the charm of Boney M because you' re much too busy listening to pink floyd or such... I used to listen to Durruti Column, Philip Glass, Tom Waits or Tuxedo Moon but I always had some minutes to enjoy some Boney M...

pinkstones
well, that's Disco I guess The song isn't bad, but the live performance video was so bad it was funny. Everyone was sitting around aimlessly clapping.
Steel2Velvet
I had never heard of this group prior to this thread. I checked out some of their music and the Wiki page. Was a bit disappointed to discover that they did not take their name from this classic song. Which would have been very cool!
