BlueAngel's Personal Top Ten

Recommended Posts

Her nickname on Songfacts always reminds me of that great Roy Orbison song, but right now Nicole is an angel not quite so blue. She has happily consented to share some great eclectic music with us. Enjoy this chorus of heavenly tunes and strike your harps for:

BlueAngel's Personal Top Ten

B.O.B. – Outkast: Not a bad job keeping up vocally with that BPM.

Black Steel – Tricky: More of an interpretation than a cover of the Public Enemy classic and a rather brilliant one at that.

Born Under A Bad Sign – Albert King: List needs some classic blues.

Brother Down – Sam Roberts: Among the first modern artists I discovered through a friend who moved to Montreal.

Buffalo Soldier – Bob Marley: List needs a little reggae too.

Californication – Red Hot Chili Peppers: The only upside to Frusciante leaving the Chili’s again is the possibility that one day they’ll reform and create another masterpiece like this one.

Change – Killing Joke: With a riff like that who needs more than like eight different words.

Chasing Heather Crazy – Guided By Voices: One of Pollard’s near perfect pop rock tunes.

Could You Be The One? – Husker Du: At their most poppy.

Down in the Tube Station At Midnight -The Jam: Some inspired bass playing.

Dry Your Eyes - The Streets: Surprisingly elegant and lovely for a cockney, garage rapper/hooligan. Best line: "She wraps her fingers round mine with the softness she's blessed with".

Edge of Seventeen - Stevie Nicks: Good rhythm.

Even Flow – Pearl Jam: I actually prefer them a little less, um, earnest.

Eye Know – De La Soul: Rather sweet and jazzy.

Fight Test – The Flaming Lips: Odd little intro but great song: "There are things you can't avoid, you have to face them, when you're not prepared to face them"

Free Fallin’ – Tom Petty: A song that’s been with me forever, I love the feel of it: "yeah I’m FREEEE!"

Get By – Talib Kweli: Another great reinvention of a classic.

Green Machine – Kyuss: One of my favourite songs when in a particularly lousy mood. "I’ve got a war inside my head..."

Head On – The Jesus and Mary Chain: This one too: "I can’t stand up, I can’t cool down, I can’t get my head off the ground."

Hey Man Nice Shot – Filter: Nice intro.

I Can See For Miles – The Who: Obviously one of the best, most knowing drum performances, ever.

I Found That Essence Rare – Gang of Four: Couldn’t get the original video on Youtube (thank you WMG’s lawyers) so it’s just a cover by Idlewild. *Original highly recommended.*

I Shall Be Released – The Band: One of Dylan’s greatest choruses "I see my light come shining, from the west down to the east, any day now, any day now, I shall be released."

Izzo (HOVA) – Jay-Z: Normally I’m not into the arrogant self-promotion that pervades much of rap but when it’s backed by music this uplifting (based rather brilliantly around a sample of the Jackson 5’s "I Want You Back") I let it slide.

Judy is a Punk – Ramones: "Oh yeahhhh"

Learn To Fly – Foo Fighters: Feel-good hit of the post-grunge years.

Life on Mars? – David Bowie: So excellently orchestrated it really doesn’t matter that I have no idea what he’s talking about.

Lightning Crashes – Live: Decent build-up.

Lord Can You Hear Me? - Spacemen 3: One of Jason Pierce's earlier attempts at incorporating gospel. Sublime.

Love Burns – Black Rebel Motorcycle Club: Another favourite intro.

Lust For Life – Iggy Pop: Choose life. Choose a job. Choose a career. ..

Midnight In A Perfect World – DJ Shadow: One of my essential chill-out songs.

Ooh la la – Faces: "I wish that I knew what I know now when I was younger, I wish that I knew what I know now when I was stronger."

P.S. You Rock My World – Eels: "...how a careful man tries to dodge the bullets, while a happy man takes a walk, maybe it’s time to live."

Pictures of You – The Cure: Only a few vocalists could pull off such overly romantic heartbreak this capably.

Risingson – Massive Attack: As excellent as they are at selecting guest collaborators and vocalists some of their classics feature just the three of them. "Now you’re lost and you’re lethal."

Roll Over Beethoven – Chuck Berry: "My heart beatin’ rhythm and my soul keep a singing the blues."

She Sells Sanctuary – The Cult: Awesome pirate uniform and good song too.

Step On – Happy Mondays: Greatest poet since W.B. Yeats.

The Ocean Breathes Salty – Modest Mouse: This one kind of grew on me.

Tuesday’s Gone – Lynyrd Skynyrd: Lovely wallowing song.

Two Months Off – Underworld: Good memories. "You bring light in."

U.R.A. Fever – The Kills: "Going 'round a break up, take you to a jukebox, that's the situation, pick you out a number and that's our arrangement."

Wake Up – The Walkmen: The Strokes always got more attention, but I thought these guys were a bit more interesting.

Wandering Star – Portishead: Few artists manage to be simultaneously delicate, lovely and disconcerting as well as Gibbons and co.

We Used To Be Friends – The Dandy Warhols: Screeches, rocks, fuzzs and falsettos quite well.

Welcome to the Jungle – Guns N’ Roses: One of my first musical discoveries, on that episode of The Simpsons that spoofs Thelma and Louise: "Tonight has nothing to do with 'nice'. Tonight's all about...'sunshine, lollipops and rainbows'"

What Do You Want Me To Say? – The Dismemberment Plan: AMG described this song best (and with a maximum of pretentious indie name-dropping): "Equal parts Pavement abstraction, Weezer anthemic hook-heavy stammer, angular Wire-esque tone experimentation, and college rock singalong, the song is at once shambolically indie, catchy like power pop, and muscular like first-rate classic rock.â€

Where is My Mind? – Pixies: "Ooooooh, Stop."

Wolf Like Me – TV on the Radio: "Got a curse we cannot lift, shines when the sunset shifts, there's a cure comes with a kiss, the bite that binds, the gift that gives."

Bit more to the modern/alternative side than last round, but hopefully something for everyone. Enjoy! :)
