Carl
A Songfacts T-shirt to the first person to correctly identify this man, who has written two #1 hits. Heck, you don't even have to name him, just one of this chart-topping hits:
skybluesky
I don't know who he is, but is extended middle finger and tattoos portray an "authority be damned" whimsy that I can get behind. He looks like the bastard offspring of Elvis Costello and Danny Bonaduce.
edna
...and a bit of Bono too...
chutzpah
I was going to guess Bono...but the bird thing?
Uncle Joe
It's gotta be Bono!
RockyRaccoon
My first look, I thought it was Elvis Costello
Lea
Mainly because of the tats and the shape of his face I was thinking Tommy Lee. But I'm terrible with faces
MuzikTyme
I go with RockyRaccoon's and ryansgirl's guess. But Elvis doesn't have sleeves, nor Bono, yes? Besides, Danny Bonaduce is too busy with some cable show, not a songwriter and a bit of a mess... more or less. Hmmm, a tricky one. Love the gold-top Les Paul, btw. miamisammy29
That wouldn't be the late John Stewart of "Gold" and "Daydream Believer" fame? Would it?
Viaene
did he wrote a punk hit?
Carl
I thought Elvis Costello when I first saw it as well. He did not sing on the hit songs he wrote, and they were definitely not in the Punk genre.
blind-fitter
Apart from a certain physionomical resemblance to Elvis Costello, the first think that struck me was what a plonker he looks. Is there anything remotely entertaining about a guy of his age (or any age for that matter) giving a casual middle-finger salute for the beneft of the camera? "Wow, you must be such a badass mutha..." It's like Liam Gallagher, approximately 40 now, yet still cannot be photographed without brooding sullenly. Unless it's an unstaged photograph, of course, when he goes into his cartoon aggressive, flicking a V-sign mode. Grow up, you prat. But I digress. I don't know who this plank is, but it occurred to me that Tim Armstrong of Rancid wrote a load of not-punk songs for the top pop artist Pink, which might well have achieved substantial commercial success. But I've no idea what Tim Armstrong looks like, so this speculative shot might be wildly wide of the mark.
Shawna
I tried googling for "songwriter with tattoo sleeves" and the name Tim Armstrong came up... unlike you, though, BF, I had no point of reference for him whatsoever... never heard of the guy in my life. blind-fitter
Well I google-imaged Tim Armstrong, and, although he is both heavily tattooed and over-fond of the stereotypical middle finger salute to the camera, it's definitely not him. The search continues...
TheLizard
If you google "tattoo sleeved songwriter two #1 hits" this thread is the first result. I guess that's what I get for cheating.
Tenacious_Peaches
I tried to cheat by checking the properties of the pictures. It's titled "ferb/flip" so I googled ferb and came up with a bunch of stuff for the Peachlette approved cartoon Phineas & Ferb but alas, no douchey songwriters. A hint, s'il vous plait? RockyRaccoon
I just ran a facial recognition. Still nothing...
MuzikTyme
Carl, Could we get a hint not quite as hard as the Elvis Costello misfit between Danny Bonaduce and Bono? Honestly, my nephew looks just like him...full sleeves and all. He wrote two #1 hits that charted what year? That would help.
Carl
This is Oliver Leiber, and he wrote Paula Abdul's hits "Forever Your Girl" and "Opposites Attract." Something about the incongruity between those songs and this photo appealed to me. The image of Oliver flipping us off is just for kicks - the ones we use in our interview represent him better, especially the one with the dog. Oliver did the second ever recording session with Paula, who was a wreck after working with LA Reid and Babyface, who told her she sucked. It was Oliver's first big break as well, so he was very gentle and did what was needed to get Paula sounding good. Many of you will recognize the last name, and yes, he's the son of Jerry Leiber of Leiber & Stoller. Check out the Interview with Oliver Leiber. Steel2Velvet
Who is this member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame? Carl
George Weiss, who wrote "Can't Help Falling in Love"?
