Gentle Giant

Think about groups King Crimson, Yes and Peter Gabriel-era Genesis. Compared to Gentle Giant, they were mainstream and highly accessible.

We spoke with the brothers Ray and Derek Shulman, who formed the band. They called it quits in 1980 and never looked back, but now their music is available digitally, so you can find it on places like Amazon and iTunes.

The big story here is the post-Giant careers of Ray and Derek, who worked as a producer and record executive, respectively. Derek brought us Bon Jovi, Slipknot and Nickelback, and Ray produced Bjork and the Sugarcubes. Their insights on these acts and what makes them click is valuable stuff, and goes a long way toward explaining Bon Jovi.
