A 28-year-old man has been arrested and charged with attempting to kill Kurt Westergaard, who drew one of the infamous Mohammed cartoons.

PET, the national intelligence agency, has stated that the man, who is of Somalian descent, has close ties to the al-Shabaab terrorist organization and Al Qaida in East Africa.

At 10pm last night, the man broke into Westergaard’s home near Århus armed with a knife and an axe, and threatened to kill the cartoonist. Westergaard hid in his ‘panic room’ and called the police, who arrived minutes later.

When police arrived, the 28-year-old smashed the window of a police vehicle with his axe. He then threw the axe at a police officer before being shot twice.

According to East Jutland Police, he has been charged with attempting to murder both Westergard and a police officer, and will appear in court after recovering from his gunshot wounds.

Westergaard has had his life threatened several times since the publication of the infamous Mohammed cartoons in newspaper Jyllands-Posten in 2005. In 2006, two men were arrested for planning to kill him and he has been the target of bomb threats on numerous occasions.
