cyberjudge
Hello again. I’m DJ Ceejay, here to ring in October with the harvest moon edition of Golden Oldies Top 40. Last week, Sam Cooke worked his way to #1 with Chain Gang. Will it stay chained to the top spot again? Stay right where you are. 4 songs drop out this week: Chuck Berry’s Back in the U.S.A. backs out of the countdown, after hitting #32. Dion’s Runaround Sue finally gets the runaround, falling out after a run that went all the way to #1. Surf City washes ashore this week after cresting at #25. And the hammer falls on Peter Paul & Mary’s If I Had a Hammer, which lasted only 1 week on the chart, at #39. The trio still have 2 songs in the countdown that we’ll hear from a little later. 4 new songs enter the chart this week: Deep Purple by Nino Tempo & April Stevens decorates our chart at #38. Nat King Cole begins his reign in the countdown, debuting at #37 with Too Young. Ricky Nelson enriches our chart with his latest hit, Poor Little Fool, which enters at #34, joining It’s Late, which slides up a spot to #24. And continuing our color theme, Bobby Vinton returns to the chart this week with Blue on Blue, the highest debut of the week at #31. The Polish Prince previously topped the chart with Blue Velvet. Only 1 song makes a double-digit climb this week: Cry Baby by Garnet Mimms & the Enchanters casts its spell on the chart, with a magic 13-spot gain from #35 to #22. Other notable gainers are: Puff the Magic Dragon by Peter Paul & Mary, up 9 from #28 to #19 Blowin’ in the Wind by Peter Paul & Mary, up 7 from #33 to #26 Silhouettes by the Rays, up 7 from #23 to #16, and Stagger Lee by Lloyd Price, also up 7 from #19 to #12. Only 1 new song enters the top 10 this week: The Wanderer by Dion wanders up 6 places from #15 to #9, becoming the 2nd top 10 for Dion. His 1st top 10, Runaround Sue went to #1. That brings us to the top 3: Green Onions by Booker T & the MG’s is no longer green, as it becomes the 1st instrumental in the top 3, moving up from #5 to #3. Spanish Harlem by Ben E King holds at #2 for the 3rd straight week. And the 1st song to repeat at #1 since Then He Kissed Me by the Crystals, 5 weeks ago: Chain Gang by Sam Cooke. That’s all for this week’s “rapâ€. Until next week, keep your head in the stars and keep reaching for the ground.
