All members of Songfacts are most welcome to vote and help create next week's Top 40. Don't be shy. It may look a little complicated, but it's not really. You don't have to be an 'oldie' - just someone who appreciates this kind of music.

Pink, we were raising/having Kids when those Super Groups of the 70s were big. Also we didn't have FM radio in Australia then, and most of the AM plays were under 3 minutes. That ruled out most Floyd and Led Zep, etc. songs.

Thanks for voting Kenne. :)

Something's bothering me, so I want to run it by you. :P

It's about re-nominating songs that have already been in the Top 40 before. So far, the songs that have made Re-Entries have been ones that were only moderately successful first time around, i.e. didn't reach a high position or weren't in for long.

There's a couple re-nominated this time that definitely don't fit that description.

Since I Don't Have You was in the Chart for 17 weeks and reached #10.

Cathy's Clown was in the Chart for 16 weeks and also reached #10.

I don't want to dampen anyone's enthusiasm, or make any more rules, but I think we could truthfully say that both of those songs have already had their opportunity.

In the circumstances, I propose to exclude these two songs, and invite anyone who voted for them to please give replacements. I hope you'll think that's fair.

I intend to update Every Song That's Made The GO Top 40 with Highest Chart Position reached and Total Weeks In for each song when I get the time. Maybe I could call on CeeJay to assist (?), as he is the Master Statisticion. He's helped me out before with some details behind the scenes, for which I'm very grateful.

Goodnight All. :)

WHEN HAVE SONGS RE-ENTERED THE BILLBOARD SINGLES CHARTS ?

After Michael Jackson's death, a flood of his singles re-entered.

Chubby Checker's THE TWIST was #1 in 1960, and again in 1962 when the Twist dance craze was at it's peak.

The 4 Seasons' DECEMBER,1963 was #1 in 1975 and charted for a further 27 weeks when re-released in 1994 (a ReMix).

The Righteous Brothers' UNCHAINED MELODY was #4 in 1965, and that original version recharted for another 19 weeks in 1990 after being featured in the Movie 'Ghost'.

Queen's massive worldwide Hit BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY recharted at #2 in 1992, following Freddie Mercury's death in 1991, and being featured in the Movie 'Wayne's World'.

Some songs have recharted after being featured in TV Commercials !

I'm sure there's others you can think of too !

Well, it's been over 13 hours since I made the Post about excluding the re-nominations of songs that have previously met with success in our Top 40.

I don't want to force my will upon you, so if anyone strongly disagrees with that, please either make a Post or PT me. Don't just go away - mad or otherwise. ;)

What would be the criteria for excluding a song from re-entry? Could there be a formula for number of weeks and/or highest position?

It seems to me, this would get very complicated, especially if the GO Top 40 continues on for years & years.

I often seem to be a devil's advocate, but I would object to disqualifying re-entries of prior top 10's. First of all, we are dealing with a very limited period of potential nominees (14 years from 1950-1963, but most of them in a 9-year span from 1955-1963). If we start excluding former successes, we run the risk of running out of good songs to nominate very quickly. Secondly, it's very undemocratic -- if the voters don't want re-entries, all they have to do is not vote them in. Third, as a practical matter, it's just a pain to keep track of. Former #1's are highlighted in red, but TT's are not, and it would require looking back at all the old charts to see if a song is eligible. I'll know a lot from doing my "raps", but it's hard to keep track of after 31 charts; after 100, it would be impossible. And finally, we've already had a top 10 re-enter and noone said "boo"! Jailhouse Rock by Elvis was #6 on the very first chart, then re-entered in week #21. Betcha didn't know that. ;)

And as for Billboard Hot 100 reentries:

4 songs hit the top 10 in 2 separate chart runs with the same recording:

As you mentioned:

The Twist by Chubby Checker (the only 2 time #1), and

Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen,

and also:

Monster Mash by Bobby "Boris" Pickett & the Cryptkickers, #1 in 1962 and #10 in 1973, and

Stand by Me by Ben E. King, #4 in 1961 and #9 in 1986.

Other notable songs which hit the top 10 then recharted in the top 40 include:

(We're Gonna) Rock Around the Clock by Bill Haley & His Comets, #1 in 1955, recharted in 1974,

Surfin' U.S.A. by the Beach Boys, #3 in 1963, then recharted in 1974,

Twist and Shout by the Beatles, #2 in 1963, then recharted in 1986

And then of course, there's the granddaddy of all re-entries ... 1st recorded in 1942, and a chart entry in each of 20 different years:

White Christmas by Bing Crosby.
