GOLDEN OLDIES TOP 40 #30 (week commencing September 6th 2009) This has been an amazing week from where I sit. 4 songs in the Top Ten each received a lot of support, and the Top 3 was in doubt right until the end of voting ! cyberjudge
Hello again. I’m DJ Ceejay. This week, we present the 30th weekly Golden Oldies Top 40 countdown. Are you ready? Here we go! Dropping out this week are: Blue Velvet, a former #1 by Bobby Vinton Da Doo Ron Ron, by the Crystals, which stalled at #30 Chances Are by Johnny Mathis, which reached #29 and Will You Love Me Tomorrow by the Shirelles, which topped off at #27. 4 new songs enter this week: The Everly Brothers return to the countdown this week after a 6 week absence. They were last in our chart in week #23 with Wake Up Little Susie. This week, they return at #39 with their 4th chart hit, Crying in the Rain. At #38 is a song that returns to the countdown. Back in week #13, Lonely Teardrops by Jackie Wilson peaked at #38. This week, it re-enters at #38, matching its 1st run peak. And in the category of “déjà vu all over again†(thanks Yogi), another re-entry rejoins the chart at #36; El Paso by Marty Robbins was last in our chart in week #5, when it peaked at #34. This week, it comes back in at #36. And the highest debut this week achieves yet another milestone: the 1st song in our countdown to have the same name as its artist: Bo Diddley by Bo Diddley. This week has probably the least movement within the chart of any week I can remember. Only 1 song makes a double-digit climb this week, and only 3 songs move up as many as 5 notches! Moving up 5 this week are: Pretty Little Angel Eyes by Curtis Lee, from #33 to #28, and La Bamba by Ritchie Valens, which moves from #31 to #26 in its 2nd chart run (it peaked at #23 the 1st go around). And the biggest mover, up 17 positions from #34 to #17 is the 1st hit for Motown artist Marvin Gaye, Hitch Hike. Only 1 song enters the top 10 this week, and it’s the 1st top 10 for Sam Cooke, sliding up from #11 to #9, Chain Gang. Now, to the top of the charts: Last week’s #1, Then He Kissed Me by the Crystals, co-written by the late Ellie Greenwich, drops down to #4. Up 3 notches from #6 to #3 is the 2nd top 3 hit for Ben E. King, Spanish Harlem. Also moving up 3 spots from #5 to #2 is Solomon Burke with Cry to Me. And lighting its way to the top of the chart is yet another new #1. The #1 song on Golden Oldies Top 40 this week is: 16 Candles by the Crests. Log in again next week for yet another Golden Oldies top 40 countdown, right here on great web sites like www.songfacts.com. Until then, keep your head in the stars and keep reaching for the ground. And leave your mouse right where it is.
pinkstones
Spanish Harlem at #3, excellent! Just need to give it a little extra push to get it to #1. Also great to see one of my noms this week make it in.
OLD 55
Thanks for your 'rap' CeeJay. And thanks for your feedback Pink. Speaking of new songs, one of last week's Newies almost didn't survive ! Shake, Rattle And Roll didn't get any votes this week, incurring a -2 points 'lack of interest' penalty. It just held out 'Surfin' Bird' and 'Where The Boys Are'.
OLD 55
I just realised that I voted the current #1 down by 4 points, and #2 up by 5 points. It wasn't done to manipulate the Chart. More about that after voting finishes. The 'current #1' was Then He Kissed Me and '#2' was 16 Candles. Then He Kissed Me hadn't received much support, and at that time had dropped to third behind 16 Candles and Spanish Harlem. So it's mighty close at the Top, and I wouldn't be at all surprised to see another new #1 next week. We're sure going through them quickly ! It really would be nice to get some more feedback. eg I was very pleasantly surprised at the votes that 16 Candles got this week, and that it reached #1. I like the Crests, with the great Johnny Maestro on lead vocals, a lot.

OLD 55
Thanks Kenne. Yes, it received a lot of support in early votes this week, but stalled at the finish.
