That's OK Lucky. :) Lea is still to vote, and Ian/Canam if he's around. I haven't seen him online this week, so I hope he's well !

Thanks for voting Lars, Don and Nicole. :)

Lars, the Shadows never had a Hit in the U.S. :o

Which is very difficult to believe, as they topped Charts in the U.K., Europe, and of course here in Australia. In fact they're coming out here for a reunion concert with Cliff Richard in February. My Wife and I just might go and see them. I'm sure they'll play 'Flingel Bunt'.

It’s time again for Golden Oldies Top 40, where we count down the top songs of the pre-British invasion era. I’m your host DJ Ceejay. Let’s get started.

4 songs drop out this week:

Tell Him by the Exciters, which topped off at #16,

Dream lover by Bobby Darin, a former #2 smash,

Telstar by the Tornadoes, which reached #29, and

Sea Cruise by Frankie Ford, which made it as high as #14.

That puts 4 songs into the countdown:

Leading off our new entries at #37 is Big Joe Turner’s version of Shake Rattle and Roll (a song also covered by Bill Haley & the Comets).

At #36 is the 3rd chart hit for Chuck Berry, who previously charted with Johnny B. Goode and Maybelline. His newest hit is Back in the U.S.A. It’s also the 2nd song on our chart to include “U.S.A.†in the title, following the Beach Boys’ Surfin’ U.S.A.

At #34 is the 1st chart entry for Motown legend Marvin Gaye, Hitch Hike.

And the highest song to enter our countdown this week is a re-entry of a song that previously reached #23; resurfacing at #31 this week, it’s the return of La Bamba by Ritchie Valens. La Bamba is 1 of only 2 songs thus far on the GO-40 sung in a language other than English; the other was Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu (Volare) by Domenico Modugno.

4 songs make giant leaps of at least 10 spots this week, 3 of which debuted last week:

Surf City by Jan & Dean debuted last week at #39 and surfs up 11 notches to #28.

Another surfing song, Surfin’ Safari by the Beach Boys, entered the chart last week 1 spot ahead of Surf City at #38, and this week stays 1 wave ahead of Surf City, climbing up 11 to #27.

Cry Me a River by Julie London was last week’s highest debut at #35; this week it flows up 12 positions to #23.

And in its 3rd week, Sam Cooke is knocking on the door looking for his 1st top 10 as Chain Gang becomes his highest charter, working its way from #22 to #11.

Only 1 new song reaches the top 10 this week:

In its 5th chart week, Etta James at last earns her 1st top 10 with … At Last, which slides up from #12 to #9.

Coming up, our tribute to a one-time teacher turned legendary songwriter, who passed away just this week.

Now, let's count down the top 3:

Staying at #3 this week is a former #1 for Maurice Williams & the Zodiacs, Stay.

Moving up 2 from #4 to #2 is the group from Brooklyn, the Crests, with 16 Candles.

And now we’re up to the #1 song this week. And it’s a fitting tribute to 1 of its songwriters, who tragically passed away 2 days ago. Brooklyn-born and Long Island-raised Ellie Greenwich died this past Wednesday at the age of 68. Greenwich had first pursued a career teaching on Long Island, but gave that up after a few short weeks to pursue a career in songwriting. Along with her then-husband, Jeff Barry, Greenwich teamed up to write a string of hits including 3 that have appeared on our countdown. Be My Baby by the Ronettes topped our chart in week #12 and held the #1 spot for 2 weeks. Da Doo Ron Ron by the Crystals is still in our chart at #39, after reaching #30 3 weeks ago. And Greenwich and Barry also co-wrote the song at #1 again this week. For the 2nd week in a row, the #1 song, co-written by the late legendary songwriter Ellie Greenwich:

:drummer:

Then He Kissed Me by the Crystals.

That “raps†up another Golden Oldies top 40. I’m DJ Ceejay and we’ll be back next week to count ‘em down all over again, on great web sites like www.songfacts.com . Until next week, keep your head in the stars :stars: and keep reaching for the ground. And leave your mouse right where it is. :couch:
