Best Drug Songs

I would imagine so. It's become a bit of a "standard", covered by lots of bands.

As far as I know The Sonics version is the original, as callmeanimal suggests. Given that it's a garage-punk classic, and what I know about The Fuzztones and The Cramps, (both kick-ass garage-punk / rock'n'roll bands), it's highly probable they're covers of the same song. Not having heard them, I can't be certain, but I'd be surprised if they weren't.

I have another version of Strychnine by little-known UK garage-goth band from the mid 80s, Blood & Roses.

Anybody know of any more???

One of my very favourite UK "punk" bands The Ruts had several songs about drugs, or more specifically, heroin. Far from glorifying the drug, (as some idiots have over the years), all were cautionary tales about the evil effects of the drug and about struggling with addiction. Singer Malcolm Owen subsequently died in his prime following an accidental drug overdose.

Love In Vain "Don't want you in my arms no more"

In A Rut "When you're in a rut, you've gotta get out of it..."

H-Eyes ...(catchy lyric escapes me...)

They were a great band.Well worth checking out retrospectively, if you're not familiar....

One of my faves by Willie & Waylon ~ I Can Get Off On You

Take back the weed, take back the cocaine baby

Take back the pills, take back the whiskey too

I don’t need them now, your love was all I was after

I’ll make it now, I can get off on you.

I can get by on little

Or nothing at all I know

I can get high just thinkin’

About you and so.

Well, take back the weed, take back the cocaine baby

Take back the pills, take back the whiskey too

I don’t need them now, your love was all I was after

I’ll make it now, I can get off on you.

Who would have thought

This was somethin’ that I’d ever do

I’m working it out

Mellowing out on you.

Take back the weed, take back the cocaine baby

Take back the pills, take back the whiskey too

I don’t need them now, your love was all I was after

I’ll make it now, I can get off on you.

Take back the weed, take back the cocaine baby

Take back the pills, take back the whiskey too

I don’t need them now, your love was all I was after

I’ll make it now, I can get off on you.

is it tha same song then?

Yes it is. Here are the lyrics:

Some folks like water

Some folks like wine

But I like the taste

Of straight strychnine

You may think it's funny

That I like this stuff

But once you've tried it

You can't get enough (Wow!)

Wine is red

Poison is blue

Strychnine is good

For what's ailin' you

If you listen to what I say

You'll try strychnine some day

Make you jump, it'll make you shout

It'll even knock you out

Strychnine hey, hey

I just heard a nice little block of songs that took me back to the 70's. No heavy message, just all "feel good" songs!! :)

The Shanty Song ~ Johnathon Edwards

Roll Your Own ~ The Fabulous Poodles

I just love this song. One of my favorties from The Black Crowes. The lyrics make you feel for her even though she is an addict. I think Chris Robinson's voice in this song is awesome. I like the acoustic version as well.

Black Crowes ~ “She Talks to Angelsâ€

She never mentions the word addiction

In certain company

Yes, she’ll tell you she’s an orphan

After you meet her family

She paints her eyes as black as night, now

Pulls those shades down tight

Yeah, she gives a smile when the pain comes,

The pain’s gonna make everything alright

Says she talks to angels,

They call her out by her name

She talks to angels,

Says they call her out by her name

She keeps a lock of hair in her pocket

She wears a cross around her neck

Yes, the hair is from a little boy

And the cross is someone she has not met, not yet

Says she talks to angels,

Says they all know her name

Oh yeah, she talks to angels,

Says they call her out by her name

She don’t know no lover,

None that I ever seen

Yes, to her that ain’t nothing

But to me, yeah me,

It’s everything

She paints her eyes as black as night now

She pulls those shades down tight

Oh yeah, there’s a smile when the pain comes,

The pain’s gonna make everything alright, alright yeah

She talks to angels,

Says they call her out by her name

Oh yeah, yeah, angels

Call her out by her name

Oh, angels

They call her out by her name

Oh, she talks to angels

They call her out

Yeah, they call her out

Don’t you know that they call her out by her name

My daughter did her paper on "Needle and the Damaged Done" for her health assignment....she had to analyze the song...she got an A!....I suggested that song to her...I also suggested Cocaine...she said, nope that songs been taken...I suggested Rainy Day Women....she said "Mom, there's not much to analyzing that one, now is there?"... :P
