Hello again. DJ Ceejay coming to you direct from Planet Earth with this week’s Golden Oldies Top 40

Last week, our top 3 was:

Runaround Sue by Dion at #3

Little Sister by :elvis: at #2

Blue Velvet, by the “Polish Prince†Bobby Vinton, at #1.

Who will be this week’s #1? Stay right here and find out.

5 songs drop out this week:

Wake Up Little Susie by the Everly Brothers, last week’s #40, drops off the chart after 11 weeks, ending a run of 23 consecutive weeks in the countdown for Phil & Don, starting with All I Have to Do Is Dream back in week #1.

Also dropping out are:

He’s a Rebel by the Crystals

Be My Baby, a former #1 for the Ronettes,

Shop Around, a #4 hit for the Miracles, and

Another Motown hit, Please Mr. Postman by the Marvelettes, which reached #8.

Speaking of the Crystals and the Ronettes, our trivia question this week is: ???

Which musical featured characters named Crystal, Ronette and Chiffon?

I’ll give you an opportunity to answer that on your own after the show; if noone gets it, I’ll post the answer when next week’s 40 opens.

Now on with the countdown!

There are 5 brand new songs in the countdown this week; the first time that has happened since week #9 (I Put a Spell on You, The Twist, Do You Love Me, My Boyfriend’s Back, and Sealed with a Kiss).

Leading off at #40 is Raindrops by Dee Clark

Next is 1 of 2 songs by the Drifters in our countdown. Save the Last Dance for Me is already in our countdown, slipping a notch to #25. And this week, it is joined at #39 by There Goes My Baby. The Drifters first appeared in our chart in week #3 with Up on the Roof, and haven’t missed a chart since.

At #38 is another newcomer to our chart, Barbara Lynn with You’ll Lose a Good Thing.

At #31 is the first hit for Shelley Faberes, Johnny Angel.

And at #29, another veteran returns to our chart, Roy Orbison, with Blue Bayou. Orbison had a #1 with Crying and also hit #13 with Only the Lonely.

Now it’s time for our movers and shakers. 2 songs each gain 9 spots this week:

Long Tall Sally by Little Richard moves from #26 to #17

And moving into the top 10 with a climb from #18 to #9 is 16 Candles by the Crests.

Our biggest mover this week also enters the top 10:

Then He Kissed Me by the Crystals shoots up 12 positions, from #20 to #8.

The only other song to enter the top 10 this week is a returnee to the top 10:

Breaking Up Is Hard to Do by Neil Sedaka, which had previously reached #10, rebounds after dropping to #12 and regains the #10 slot.

Now it’s time for our GO-40 extra. 40 years ago, this week, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first persons to walk on the moon. As a tribute to all those involved in space exploration who have shown “the right stuffâ€, here is an interview with a true pioneer from the fledgling days of space travel.

Now, we’re ready for the top 3:

Blue Velvet by Bobby Vinton falls to #3 after a single week in the #1 spot.

:elvis: holds steady at #2 with Little Sister.

And that brings us to another new #1 song on Golden Oldies Top 40:

:drummer:

Runaround Sue by Dion.

There you have it: this week’s edition of Golden Oldies top 40. On behalf of everyone at “mission control†here at songfacts.com, keep your head in the stars :stars: and keep reaching for the ground  .

I think you might be born to cry, Elena. :)

And how about CeeJay's question* ? It was made into a Movie in 1960 (in 2 days), and became a bit of a 'cult classic'. I'll bet most of you have seen the 1986 re-make !

*Which musical featured characters named Crystal, Ronette and Chiffon?
