Good week, I'm pleased with the new additions, I had never really been familiar with the Crystals' "Then He Kissed Me" until I re-watched Goodfellas over the weekend and looked it up. I'm glad that it cracked the top half on it's debut.

Ms. Gore, You Don't Own the top spot anymore! :D

I wonder if that's the biggest plunge yet, from the #1 spot.

Which songs have the record for highest jump and biggest plunge on these charts?

Hello again and welcome to Golden Oldies-Top 40. This is DJ Ceejay 3000 miles east of Hollywood, and we’re all set to count down the week’s favorite oldies.

Last week, our top 3 was:

Blue Velvet, by Bobby Vinton at #3,

Dream Lover by Bobby Darin at #2, and

You Don’t Own Me by Lesley (don’t call me Bobby) Gore at #1 for the 3rd straight week.

Will those songs hold their positions? We’ll reveal that later in our show. Now on with the countdown!

3 songs drop out this week:

Born Too Late by the Poni-Tails, which peaked at #31 last week,

Sea of Love by Phil Phillips & the Twilights, a former #1 that spent a record-tying 19 weeks on the chart (BTW, the other songs to accomplish that feat are All I Have to Do Is Dream by the Everly Brothers; Runaway by Del Shannon; Stand by Me by Ben E. King; and Crying by Roy Orbison),

and Poison Ivy by the Coasters, which reached the top 10, topping at #9.

That makes room for 3 new songs, all by artists making their 1st GO-40 debuts:

At #39, Connie Francis enters the chart with Everybody’s Somebody’s Fool.

Little Richard makes his first appearance at #26 with Long Tall Sally.

And the highest debut this week is at #20; Then He Kissed Me by the Crystals.

5 big movers take double digit leaps this week:

Harry Belafonte tallies up a 13-notch climb in its 2nd week with The Banana Boat Song (Day-O) from #38 to #25,

Also in its 2nd week, Hello Mary Lou by Ricky Nelson says hello to a 12-point gain from #35 to #23.

The Crests move up 18 positions from #36 to #18 in their 2nd week with 16 Candles.

And a song that had appeared to have stalled 2 weeks ago at #25, Sea Cruise by Frankie Ford, makes a dramatic turnaround this week, shooting up 12 places from #29 to a new peak at #17.

And one more song that refused to “stay†at 21 we’ll hear from a little later.

There are 4 new songs in the Top 10 this week, tying a record for most top 10 debuts (not counting the 1st countdown) set in week #2 and tied in weeks #6 and 21.

At #10, Doris Troy gets a look at the top 10 with Just One Look.

Skeeter Davis successfully ends her quest for a top 10, moving up to #9 with The End of the World,

Jerry Lee Lewis fires up the chart to #8 with Great Balls of Fire,

And skyrocketing 17 notches from #21 to #4 is Stay by Maurice Williams & the Zodiacs, which ties it with You Don’t Own Me in week 18 (#19 to #2) for the biggest jump to get into the top 5.

While we’re mentioning You Don’t Own Me, that song sets another chart record this week, although a dubious one. Up ‘til now, the song with the biggest drop from the #1 position was Crying by Roy Orbison, which fell from #1 to #5 in week 11. This week, Lesley Gore’s You Don’t Own Me smashes that by falling 18 notches, all the way down to #19.

That brings us to the top 3:

Dion moves up from #6 to #3 with Runaround Sue.

:elvis: , who has not had a song in the top 2 since week 1, when Don’t Be Cruel and Hound Dog were 1-2, finally makes it back to #2 with Little Sister.

And that brings us to the new #1 song on Golden Oldies Top 40:

:drummer:

Blue Velvet, by Bobby Vinton.

That “raps†up another edition of Golden Oldies top 40. My thanks as always to Darryl and the entire crew at songfacts.com . Until next week, keep your head in the stars :stars: and keep reaching for the ground.
