One of the most widely accepted theories is that Phil Collins witnessed a man drown, and another man stand idly by and let the other man die. The rumor was that Phil Collins went back to his hotel room after the incident, wrote the song, then bought the man first row seats, flew him in for free to the concert, and sang the song right to him. I personally do not believe this. This rumor is shot down on snopes. Usually snopes is pretty accurate, so I trust them on this one.
